Primary leak
Good luck with the project. It takes a few specialty tools, and some time. Otherwise not a tough job, just time consuming especially the first time around. Do it right the first time and heed the suggestions mentioned.
Thanks very much or the input.
t150, I'll add that to the list.
Dan, I was hoping not to have to go in that far as she's only done 18,000 miles from new!! I was going to wait till she needs a new belt (what's the life expectancy of a belt?). 40210-85D = $500au, nearly a weeks pay!
Bingee, all good there, trying to keep cost down. Prices down here are double what you lucky buggers in the US pay.
Glider, well versed in the use of Loctite. Been playing with BSA's most of my life.
LQQK OUT, yes I will use the 620. "Horses for courses" and yes not cheap 50ml + $95au.
Yaky Dog, thanks for the support. I can make most tools needed.
As mentioned she might be 34 years young but only done 18K miles (8K miles in the 2 years I've had her) and still basically stock. Just needed tips before going in blind (only got one eye that works LOL).

EDIT: WOW!! That stuff is VERY expensive. Maybe red is the more economical choice??

A less expensive choice:

I'll be ordering parts today. Tear down when it all arrives. Hope to have it done before a 2200 mile club ride in 4 weeks.
Today a short 175 mile ride to a mates funeral. His last ride is in a box on a sidecar.
I'll have to ride at the back. Nobody likes their bike covered in ATF LOL.
Cheers
The short trip on the w/end proved to be the death of the mainshaft seal. Left home with a full 1.4Lt in there. Saw the patch of oil every time I stopped. Added 800ml for return trip and dumped what was left at home. 1.4 + 0.8 = 2.2Lt minus the 1.1Lt drained out at home means on a 240Km ride she lost 1.1Lt
So parts are on the way and I've started striping her down. Gawd the hub was tight on the taper, was worried I'd snap a post off. Left it tensioned with the puller all day and gave it one more heave when I got home from work. Two pops with the knockometer and she was free.
Hopefully tonight have the inner off and work on a puller for the inner bearing race.
Cheers
Thought I'd better report. Buttoned her up yesterday and a short 50Km test this morning showed no leaks.
I'm thinking the leak was form the starter jack shaft, it looked a lot worse than the mainshaft seal.
Will be a few weeks before I can put some decent miles on her. Booked in for a hip replacement in 3 days. But it will be a nice birthday present!
Cheers

I've been banging my head trying to stop a leak. I thought it was the lowest cover screw that a previous owner had either snapped the screw or stripped the thread and in repairing had drilled the hole at an angle.
After filling the elongated hole with JB Weld and re-threading and using new gaskets 3 times, with and without sealer (#3 Permatex & RTV Silastic) she still marks her spot. Today after a ride I got down low with a torch (flashlight) and noticed it was wet up the inside of the inner primary towards the mainshaft. BUGGA looks like it's the inner primary seal.
Question. Is there anything I have to watch out for or be careful about. Never had one of these apart before.
Cheers.
