power difference?
This winter i plan on taking care of the base gasket on my motor along with a cam. Question is, would there be that much noticable difference in going with an 85CI kit or clean up current cylinders and up the compression? Either way, I will have the heads done. It's like the $1000 question. Looking at an Andrews EV13. Majority of my riding is two, local day trips. But planning on a long trips this next summer. Already have TrueDuals with Wild Pig Pipes, and Yost power tube. Any other suggestions? By the way, I am painting this black and gold anniversary edition to black and olive pearl with no decals. [&:]My luck, I'll tear this thing all the way downmy house will sell!! lol
My suggestion is seeing you are getting the heads done, why not get a cam to go with the heads. I personally went with brach heads and woods cam, with .590" lift short duration for the tq. Also 10:1 heads. Nice thing about brach heads, is they can create a headpackage to your pistons and get the desires cr. A thought, good luck.
Be careful with high compression, it hard to find pump gas good enough to run out here in the midwest and worse out west.
But you can always carry some rocket fuel (octane boost).

Ive got 10:1 pistons, cam and some head work on my 87 chopper and it feels like it will pull harder in 5th gear at 70 mph. then my 05 Springer with the stage 1 and race tuner will pull in 3rd. gear at any speed. and the Springer Dyno's out at 70 hp. and 77 ft. lbs. of tq.
How about stock pistons with a .05 overboreand have your heads shaved to up your compression a bit. You will probably need to have them shaved just to true them up. Just have them take off a little more to kick up the comp.
I put a EV 27 cam in my dresser with a power tube, pipes, Dyna tek Ign. with the above listed rebuild and am pretty happy with with it. I wasn't trying for max HP, just some reliable power upgrades.

Here's my .02:
Install 'The Oil Fix' from Hayden. It will stop the dang base gasket leaks.
The EV13 is a good cam. However, I'd recommend the EV27. I run it on my 93 FLHS, it makes decent power, gives good milage, and has a nice idle. Running two up and loaded it works great.
Get your stock heads 'street ported'. Most shops that do head work know what that means. A reputable place will have your stock heads flowing as well or better than a set of SE heads.
Up the compression to 9.5:1. Stock EVO's are like 8.9:1. You can run pump premium, and get a few extra ponies.
Swap out the stock ignition system to either a SE, Dyna, Crane, etc. You want something that will allow you to rev the bike beyond the stock 5200 rpms. Not that you are going to hold it at 6500 rpms, but you will feel the difference when running through the gears.
Get the bike dyno tuned. I can't stress the importance of finding a good shop with someone that knows how to use a dyno to tune a carb. You won't believe the difference in a properly tuned HD versus one that runs 'okay'.
Good Luck, keep us posted.
