So.. I dont like or want a 6 speed, but they no longer have the 5 speed. Since a member said his big inch twisted a stock main shaft, Im kinda turned off stock so I guess I order a 6 speed.
Purchased I really dont get a 6 speed with a big inch. Gear it 23 /47 and have an easier time loading the motor in the friction zone and launch better bleeding off a tiny bit of bottom end. On a street tire you cant launch a 140 or 150 ft lbs of torque and not spin crazy. No matter how good you are at feathering the throttle and clutch to leave the line.. might as well gear the final ratio of a 5 gear for 2:95 or so who needs 6 gears. I never needed more than four truthfully with the shovel.
Mayby guys running slicks or bars can launch and use first gear but with a street bike seems silly. 1.94 first with a 51T would suck.. if I run a 47T Ill never use 6th I guess.
6 speeds in the twisties are fun, unlike a 4 speed you won't find yourself coming out of corners in the wrong (or no) gear.

Dragons tail has me nervous. Never done it but plan to go on a trip here soon. Ill let the modern triumphs and Yamahas Ill be riding with me prove something.. Ill concentrate on keeping my shorts clean.

Glad nothing went wrong but was shifting an improvement over stock? I get the reduction in rpms on the highway might be nice, but did shifting and neutral improve?
Shifting is as smooth as could be and neutral is easy from 1st or 2nd (clutch adjustment is key there) and 5 plus years later it still works perfectly. It replaced a Jim's six speed when one of the dogs broke and went through the gears. That was a weak design flaw they later improved.
I think it shifts into neutral easier than the 5 speed in my 98 RK. Clutch adjustment probably could help there as well..

You'll appreciate the 6th for cruising 75+
The biggest thing to worry about on the Dragon is other vehicles crossing the yellows, I've been there dozens of times, last year was the first time I had a bike 2/3 of the way across my lane. The only reason we ride the dragon now is if passing through to get somewhere else.
If it's curves you want, there's a road with tighter curves than the dragon with hardly any traffic, head east out of Gatlinburg on 321 for 18 miles, take a right on 32

Baker DD6 is made for big engines but runs some strange gear ratio's making it work.
The stock 5 speed trans shaft was twisted by a 100 hp small stroker engine mentioned in the earlier post.

It amuses me that in some parts of the USA you have to ride for miles to find a bend. If I ride anywhere round where I live it's like the Dragon for at least 1.5 hours, love it!

And you have the scenery to go with it.
We visit kin often in the Smoky Mt's, it's a 500 mile run from home, leave at 1am, there by 8am, hop, skip and a jump!

Neither the stock 5 speed or the ultima 6 speed held up for me.. I eventually purchased the Baker OD6 with the N-1 shift drum and never looked back... This was in my 98 in my sig... 3 more HP... lol...
Also don't under estimate the 98-2006 clutch basket with a SE or Barnet spring. It can handle a lot of power.. Plus with the 36 tooth basket it will lower your ratio a tad.. Just need the 10 tooth starter drive..
