I have spun one but there was way too much happy hand involved with a built engine and a seriously impressive through second gear burnout in Angels Camp

Hey Twizted,

From everything I have heard, the impact could cause damage. I hear it can mess with the stator? BUT, I am game to use if it causes no problems. I have an air impact (30 gal tank old Craftsman system), but I am not sure it would provide enough torque to get it off.

I have the bar and socket on order. Those plastic locks look to likely get chewed up in my predicament. I hear the bar is far more reliable. They should be here this week.

Here is a pic of what happened to the thrust washer—the cause of all the flakes in the bottom. I have no other color floating around except brass. I am hoping that is a GOOD SIGN that the rest can be saved—but the hub may be cracked. Pic below.

I have a small propane torch and a heat shrink gun. But, I wonder if the heat shrink gun will heat it up in the way to crack it.

Chain will also be replaced as the shoe tension too—it has small grooves in it. I am thinking of going with a Diamond if I can find one. Need to count my links.

Today I will pull the spark plugs and try to find the key to set the clutch back on for compensator nut removal next week.

@TwiZted Biker : your dog sure seems to have something against the Pink Panther! Been meaning to say that since I joined the forum!

Seriously, thank you for all the advice.

Guarantee you 99% of the shops use an impact for that job. But do what you are comfortable with, you are going to find wrestling with a socket on the end of cheater bar all kinda fun to keep on the thin nut.

Another vote for using the impact. I've never had an issue with EVO (or early TC cranks) when using one. Breaks clean with less potential damage.

Both you and @Stiggy have convinced me. I will start with my air impact—but I may just go get an 18v. They seem to have more break free torque. On reassembly—blue loctite? New nut/bolt?

I've done both just be sure you have the correct socket. Buy a new bolt and it should already have blue loctite and if not yes use it.

Ride safe!

Comp nuts reusable if it isn't buggered up or the shoulder worn on the bell, just clean out the old loctite and don't get crazy with it going back together.

As I mentioned earlier a little heat on the nut helps.

On the crank and trnny nuts, I use red. SM recommends 262 loctite. At least the TC manuals do. Too lazy to dig out an evo one..

Default Update

I got the clutch hub nut back on—rear wheel now turns when I wrench around the compensator nut—I have a 1-½ end wrench…
Got the clutch nut on snug—the clutch is solid—no movement. Will not torque down tho until bar arrives.

Checked my air impact—only sports 300 ft lbs. Not sure if that is enough after using torch.

Either way I am ready to go absent a batt impact and parts. Still searching for primary chain.

I cannot get the pushrod out…just wanted to see what it looked like. Need a stronger small magnet.

My electric impact rates at around 200 lbs and it was enough (several times.)

I think you'll be fine.

Why I love that big Milwaukee 18v, we use to run big 3/4"x 8" long screw in concrete anchors at the plant, things are a beast. Bought my own and it's every bit the gun my $$ IR air impact is.
