Default 1993 FLSTF Starter Replacement

Went to start the bike yesterday and the starter gear/bendix spins but does not engage. This happened a few times prior but eventually it would engage and start. Battery is brand new and fully charged. My question is should I replace the starter gear only or the complete starter? The starter is 30 years old. It doesn’t look like HD makes the starter anymore. What are some good aftermarket choices? I’m leaning towards complete replacement. I’ve ordered an HD shop manual. Any tips or advice would be appreciated

I just replaced a 38 yr old starter on a 1985 FXWG, it just finally gave out. Rebuild kit was $50 and my time rebuilding and new starter was $160 all set to go. I bought new and installed and hopefully get my bike started today. Also it was difficult to find a rebuild kit. JP Cycles or Dennis Kirk for the starter, IMO.

Ride safe!

The '85 starter is a totally different animal from the '89-up starter setup.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'73-'88 starter motor. The clutch, solenoid and gear reduction are separate items.

'89-up starter is (basically) a complete unit.

Don`t replace the starter, just replace the starter clutch.

That OEM starter motor is better than most of the junk available today.

All ***** Starter Clutch All ***** Starter Clutch

Yes you are correct, thank you. In the end the OP will have to decide to break his down, inspect, and rebuild or buy a new one. Also I never stated that was the starter for him to get, I told him my recent situation for him to decide what route he wants to go, that's all.

Ride safe!

I figured you knew that, but a lot of others don't have a clue.
