I too had the "dreaded click" issue on my '89 EG. I added a second relay and it worked for me, until I got the nudge and help from t150vej to fix it right. As long as yours is working as is, and you don't want to spend some time with the wiring schematic and chasing wires, I say live with it, but I'm glad I found my culprit. Some people are never affected by the "dreaded click" so they are lucky. After checking the common issues, such as battery, grounding, relay, starter button, etc... it could well be something in those 30 + year old wires.

The Tan color wire from the ACC breaker to starter relay was "broken" inside the loom where it was secured to the frame by a clamp. Year after year of turning the handlebars left and right just wore/pinched the internal wire. Maybe it started out life at the factory already pinched and took years to get bad. I replaced the whole wire from ACC breaker to starter relay and eliminated the second relay. The fix back to factory spec has lasted close to a year without issue. Hopefully, this can help some.

Daven went above and beyond and is being too modest about his repair.

Bikes with a 4 post start relay are a slightly different animal from a Tour model with a 5 post relay. Nonetheless, if the factory setup causes the dreaded click, there's a voltage loss somewhere and that can be repaired properly without installing an extra piece of circuitry. Don't get me wrong, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and I'm big on whatever works when you have to.

Point being, kudos to Daven for taking the time and effort to find the issue and make a class act of a repair.

Mine was doing exactly that. Just posted this...something to consider.

Thanks for all the answers, I'll look into the wire thing, and in the mean time I bought a button for the starter, just in case.
