no sealant necessary. The threads on the plug are an interference fit with the threads in the outer cover.

I used to wrap a little teflon tape around mine.

Never had a leak.

Then I got lazy and stopped using the tape.

Still never had a leak.

I had a terrible time with leaks on my drain plug. I bought one of these: https://www.cyclesolutions.com/produ...ain-plug-dyna/

It still leaked a little here and there. I think it's not leaking from the drain plug. It may be leaking from the outer primary cover. I got a bad leak a year or so ago and I may have warped the outer primary; even with a healthy dose of gasket seal around it.

That fancy plug won't get you in the cheap old bastard club but it's got an O ring and a shoulder. I was screwing my stock plug in so far it nearly went through.

So it's been about a year and my primary drain plug hole is stripped out bad. No sealant alive is going to plug this thing. The threads are really chewed up. I was thinking about putting a helicoil in it so I could use that fancy drain plug (see my thread above). I didn't think you could get a 1/8-27 NPT helicoil kit but they have them. I'm going to pull the primary off to do the operation. Before I go and spend money on the helicoil kit, any reason I shouldn't do this?

I'm thinking a timesert would be a better option if you have the meat to drill and tap for it.

With the timesert, you will probably need a larger initial hole to set it in place than the helicoil, but the timesert is a sold steel sleeve that stays in place. With the occasional unthreading of the drain plug, I'm not sure if a helicoil will like the NPT threads as NPT plug threads get slightly larger the deeper you go in.

A nice steel sleeve permanently installed in the soft aluminum housing would seem to me like the best option for a tapered NPT plug.

O ring and a bit of pipe dope every time on the 3 holes. I use plumbers dope that is gas and oil resistant from Lowe’s.

I agree. The time sert will be better than a heli coil. A little more expensive but cheaper than a new primary chain if the oil runs out.

Small issue with the timesert. The OD of the countersink tool might be too big to clear the primary. If it's larger than the OD of a 7/16" socket, it won't fly. I'm going to call the timesert folks Tuesday morning to ask them to check for me.

I used "Kawasaki bond" for my Dyna EVO primary, for 21 years. Based on mileage alone, I R & R'd that plug about 40-45 times.
No leaks.
EDIT~
Come to think of it, I used the "KB" for 4 Harleys over the course of *<1 million miles*, with no leaks. With total "R & R's" closer to about 250 reps.

*Not all the miles were mine.* (But most were...)

My problem right now is not which sealant to use. The threads in the primary are chewed up and mostly gone. After I make the mechanical fix, then I'll pick out a sealant.
