Default Just wondering...

Okay, my '97 FLSTC is running great. Fires up extremely quickly, fantastic mpg's, there is some wobble when letting off the throttle in 4th gear but one hand on the handlebars stops it easily enough (I added grease to the neck as when I was doing so it took quite a bit, so seems it needed it and may help now), all the lighting is working beautifully and a little more about that - with *ALL* bulbs in the bike replaced with LED's and the headlight and passing lights also, I put my multimeter on the battery yesterday to see how well it was charging, and with the headlight on high beam and the passing lights on it never dropped below 14.25 at idle...I thought that was pretty nice!.

Anyway, what I'm wondering is, this bike only has a 4.2 gallon tank. Is it possible to put a tank that holds more (like close to or is 5 gallons) on this bike from something else without having to know how to weld or be a Master electrician? As it is, with this 4.2 gallon tank and averaging 52 mpg, I'll only be able to get 200 miles per tank (if I want to take the chance of there being that slight little bit left in the reserve and hoping something hasn't happened that I didn't hear/see/feel to suddenly find it dropped to 40 mpg for whatever reason!). With my '98 FXD, I got 45 mpg and with a 4.9 gallon tank I got 220 and never had to use the reserve (though I'm sure it was a blonde hair close to it! LOL). I figure 240 miles on a tank would be nice, as those who travel a lot or ride a lot know that 40 extra miles can really be nice to end or lessen by a lot the gas stops on trips.

That wobble on decel ought to be looked into a little more. I would take a careful look at both tires for strange tread wear.

On a sloptail you want a butt break every hour, hour and a half, just make them gas stop's. How we traveled on shovels for decades, never stretch a tank past 3/4 unless you have no choice.

I think the EVO era Softail Custom model used larger fuel tanks.

Yeah, I wasn't happy with it, but haven't taken it out yet after greasing the neck. I'm hoping that was all it was, but will probably do a fall-away too, just to be sure all's well. Got the new tires for it sitting off to the side in the shop. Gotta get tubes and rim liners for it next month (damned disability didn't quite go very far this month already, <sigh>, and get to look forward to putting them on by hand...always fun, especially in 88+ degrees and 85%+ humidity (West TN weather in the summer...and fall...and last half of spring going into summer, but luckily spring here only seems to be about two weeks long, LOL).
