How many you guys are running 20-50 in all three holes and Dino or synthetic does it matter? I know this is a loaded subject. Honestly, all I’m concerned with is the transmission seen this royal purple stuff tonight thought about picking it up but it seemed expensive probably paying for a name… thoughts?
I don’t think I would run anything but gear oil in my tranny. I was looking at that royal purple shat tonight considering putting that in the next change. Anybody got advice on that or use the purple?
I gotta admit, I’m about to live on my bike so running 20-50 in all three holes would be quite advantageous and cost-effective but I’m more about performance and care for the bike. I do run just the cheapest stuff at Walmart sae20-50 I think it’s called super tech. I’m not at all against Harley Davidson oil, I just think you’re paying for a name with a lot of oils. That royal purple seems a costly premium, but people swear by it i’m just looking for something good and dependable to run in my transmission that doesn’t cost a lot.
Primary: that’s simple all you’re lubricating is a chain and cooling the clutch. I knew a Royal purple rep the people that use the purple swear by the purple. I’ve never used the purple myself, but I know a lot of purplepeople. Purple, purple, purple, purple purple. Thanks again for all your Jedi like insight and god like knowledge. 🙏, ride hard. Johnny

I run Lucas Dino HD motorcycle oil in the engine and primary. But I use a GL1 gear oil in the trans. Don't use GL5 oils in the trans because it can cause problems with yellow metals.

Don't think there is any yellow metals in a harley 5 speed. Or at least I did not come across any the few times I had mine apart to pull the gear set.
I use pretty much a 75 or 80w-90, and have some 85w-140 for other vehicles, so sometimes it's a mix. Don't notice a bit of difference in which GEAR LUBE I use. I just stick with a brand name.
While not a fan of using the cheapest stuff available, I hope you mean the cheapest Motorcycle Specific 20-50 engine oil. Harleys have an air-cooled engine. I believe it has a higher percentage of zinc and possibly other additives. I run Harley stuff as I am rural with a dealership nearby. The auto parts M/C oils are not much cheaper if cheaper at all than Harley around here. 30 years ago there was a huge price gap, not so much now.

Yes, you are correct. I'm in the middle of a 4 speed rebuild, so my mind doesn't change gears as well as it used to.
