Not calling anyone out, but I did look at my valve covers. They're purdy ugly...as compared to the rest of the engine, and her general look.

So what's the best way to get the coating that the Moco put on these off? Most of the coating was mostly off of the other aluminum parts. But the coating that was left was a PITA to get off.

With this being a new topic thread, photo's would help for what you are referring to in the first place.

If this,

Note, looks like primary case is the same color as well in the other thread topic.

So Looks like the chrome covers to start with, and where painted with something in the end,

Maybe looked like this before, and either chroming removed to polish the metal under what was chromed and them top coated to protect the raw metal, or or just bead blasted to paint instead.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/IPUAA...yO/s-l1600.jpg

Hence factory chrome covers are easy to shine up with something like never dull, unless the chrome is flaking or painted instead.

So lets start with some closer photo's to see what your up against on the covers, and them can come with an attack plan to get them looking a lot better in the end.

I assume your rocker box covers are aluminum. MoCo clear coated them to keep them shiny, you see how well that worked. I like a wet Scotchbrite pad and lots of man power. When you get it all one color again and smooth, the clear coat is gone. Then switch to Mother's Aluminum Polish. Going to take some time, keep going until your finger go numb, then go for about another hour or so. PITA but when done you will have shiny aluminum. Good luck.

Here's a write up I did a while back on polishing aluminum. The key is getting the coating off and aircraft stripper is the bomb.

Great info!! Never thought about aircraft stripper. I guess I'll have to start working on them. I do have 400, 800, 1000, and 1500 wet/dry with me. Gunna have to pull the tank to change the cover bolts gaskets, they weep. Maybe I'll strip them then.

Wish I was in Idaho with my stuff, I used my grinder as a buffer on the trans covers, primary cover, and all the aluminum on the front end. Did the cam chest cover when I changed the pipes.

Methlyene Chloride will remove the clearcoat. "Bombs Away" will polish'em up real well.

Those don't look chrome, if you strip them you'll just have raw aluminum.
They were suppose to look like that to match the raw aluminum case and heads.
Then a maintenance issue. Just get replacement covers.
2 rocker and 1 nosecone. then you can do whatever you want to the old ones without much downtime.
