Default help identifying exhaust

I picked up a 1998 FXSTC, and I am curious if anyone can help me identify what kind of exhaust I have. There are no marking on it anywhere.

Looks like it immediately steps to 2 in, some aftermarket pipe.. Definitely too much pipe for an Evo though, unless it's 106 or 113"er...

Didn't D&D makes pipes like that back then?

it's a stock evo with a SE air filter; CV carb (45/180 jets), and these pipes. Seems to run fine, plugs look good. just curious; especially cause it's usually one of the first things people ask.

Is there a hidden crossover pipe near the transmission? Look up the tail of the pipe, is it hollow, or is there a baffle? If you really like them you could go with a DK insert or at minimum do the lollipop and possibly torque cones.

Others are ring, it’s a lot of pipe for a stock 80” EVO. But if your plans are more compression, hotter cam, ported heads you can make those run pretty decent even if your sacrificing some ponies down low. If those are true 2” inside diameter straight pipes, they are really too big.

They might be Sampson Straight Shot. Look really similar to the ones i had on my 03 FXST.

There is no hidden crossover, and there are baffles. Not necessarily a fan of them; but can't afford new ones anytime soon. Not to mention that the exhaust bolt's have done nothing but rust since these pipes were put on it. What are lolipops and torque cones? I did google the DK inserts; which are what I thought were torque cones; but I'm pretty green

if you have baffles in them now, they likely are not terrible performance wise. That large diameter outside might really be a built-in heat shield. There may be an internal pipe that’s a little smaller leading to those bathrooms. There were a number of pipe manufacturers back in the Day of the dead that.

what exactly would you like to accomplish? Are they not making enough power, do you just want to know what name brand they were? If you’re happy with them and financially stuck with them, then I just keep running them. I don’t think they look bad. In fact, I think they look nice. Get some mothers polish and clean them up. To get rid of that bluing there’s a product called blue job. It works pretty good.

if it’s running like crap, go to the hardware store and buy yourself two 1 3/4 inch long quarter inch bolts that are threaded the entire way to the head. Buy two nuts that fit the 1/4” bolts, I like 1/4 20.
‘Drill a 1/4” hole 2” from the very back of your pipe at the bottom.. so you do nit see the hole unless your under the bike.

place the bolts through the hole 1/3 of the way and put both nuts onto the threads, push the bolt all the way in. Now tighten the bottom nut all the way inside the pipe. Then tighten the second nut the rest of the way.

A better way is large thumb screws.. put one nut on the thumb screw and from inside the pipe lower it into the hole.. then tighten the Two nuts at the outside of the pipe. Try to position the thumb in the dead center of the pipe.. cut the excess threaded portion past the two nuts on the outside off.

RETUNE YOUR CARB

if the problem persists.. buy exhaust gaskets, buy torque cones… install

RETUNE YOUR CARB

Noticed you have floating rotors on it.. that’s a good sign meaning somebody cared about that bike before you and was willing to upgrade and spend some money. I bet the pipes are higher quality than you might think.

all I'm trying to accomplish right now is too learn. Haven't put enough miles on to really know for sure if there is any performance issues, or what kind of issues too big of an exhaust would cause. Usually when I read a post in this forum people start the list with make model, and how the air comes in, and how the air comes out, and I really wouldn't be able to answer that yet.

I've gone from trying to just identify what pipes I have to now learning more about the science behind it all, and normally I can ask very novice questions without any grief. It's why I really like this forum
