From his signature it looks like a 1999 Softail Heritage Classic. FLSTC. Stock 80cui Evo, 5 speed.

Would rather ride than turn a wrench. Regular fluid changes and I ride.

1999 with 23,000 miles on the clock. I'm pulling the outer primary cover this weekend anyway, so I'll check that.

I'm with you, but off season where you can't ride due to snow/stuck at the house, kind of therapeutic knocking out the bikes yearly maintenance then, so your good to just ride come the warm seasons instead. Hence the reason when buying a used bike, do so during the off season, so have plenty of time pulling the bike down to do detail inspections/ knock out the services or adjustments it may need, and so come spring through fall, ride free without problems for the most part instead..

Good for you, but the OP is having issues with shifting on his motorcycle, ignoring it is not the answer.

@Robtattoo

You adjusted the shift lever to be lower, did the issue exist before you adjusted the lever?

Make sure the lever has full travel.

Check all linkage for freedom of movement, check the lever at the transmission.

Check primary lube level, make sure it is not overfilled.

Check clutch adjustment.

Check shifter pawl adjustment per the service manual.

I doubt this is a clutch issue.

There is no riveted spring plate in this clutch.

Not to my knowledge or recollection, but I only had a really short 1st-2nd-3rd gear test ride.

Make sure the lever has full travel.

It does.

Check all linkage for freedom of movement, check the lever at the transmission.

Everything is moving full travel & returning as it should (as far as I can tell)

Check primary lube level, make sure it is not overfilled.

Outer primary is coming off this weekend, so if that's an issue, it'll be solved.

Check clutch adjustment.

Checked & adjusted at pushrod.

Check shifter pawl adjustment per the service manual.

I have GOT to get one of those.....

I doubt this is a clutch issue.

There is no riveted spring plate in this clutch.
Replies in the quote.

I checked the pawl, per @Greaser1340 previous instruction (3rd gear, move the lever back & forth to check travel) & there is a little more forward than rearward travel at the shifter shaft.

I always go by the Harley Service Manual when I fill the primary case with oil. Same for the other adjustments on the bike.

Probably needs centering then...there is an adjuster on the left side of the top of the tranny (not the cover), you can either pop the cover and do it properly or just mess with the adjuster and see if that helps.
