Default Trans/Inner Primary seals

97 FLHTCUI

It seems I have a leak in that area, I don't know which, but I don't think it matters as once I'm in there might as well do them all.

Has anyone got a link to a how to video?
I see lots of twin cam videos but no evo.
Thanks.

I do have a manual.
This is going to be a winter job, not right now.

You will need a locking bar to immobilize the compensator and clutch when removing the retaining nuts.

A short 1-1/2" 6-point socket (1/2" drive) for the compensator nut.

A 1-3/16" six-point socket for the clutch hub nut (left-hand thread).

A special tool to remove and install the inner primary bearing inner race.

A 7/8" socket for the transmission sprocket nut (left-hand thread), this is a special tool that you will have to buy or make.

The most important tool you need is a genuine Harley Davidson service manual, there is no substitute.

Replace all the seals on the left side of the transmission, and all the seals on the inner primary cover.

Also replace the sprocket spacer, quad seal, and the inner primary bearing inner race.

Use new screws on the sprocket nut lockplate.

I think Dan89FLSTC may have mistyped the size of the sprocket nut socket and left the "1" off. It should be 1-7/8.

As Dan said, replace all seals while you have the primary off because that is the most time consuming part. So be sure you include the shift shaft seal as well.

That's the plan.
I think I have all the necessary sockets, but need some of the other tools.

Take your time, and if unsure, stop and ask questions here. Bring it all back to the original stock set up using OEM parts.

My first time around, I went with the "high torque" bearing set up as it did save a little time and a few bucks, but ended up going back to the original set up as I developed a minor leak at the aftermarket "high torque" bearing seal. So much for saving a little time and a few bucks.

I don't trust made in china bearings and seals. I know we are limited as to where we can get parts, but if buying OEM seals and bearings, they are better than the amazon or ebay stuff. My current IPB race is "made in Mexico" OEM, and my current IPB is a new old stock made in USA bearing. Seals are OEM made in USA, front pulley is Andrews, and main shaft 5th gear is Andrews.

I have no problems with made in Japan bearings either.

Can't stress the factory manual to assist you. And again, ask questions. Any youtube video regarding the 5 speed will be the same regardless of it being a twinkie or an evo. Maybe a little difference on how the inner primary bolts up and a different style clutch, but that's about it.

search in youtube: "harley 5 speed inner primary"

I just replaced all bearings and seals in the 5 speed on my `89 Softail (it ate the dipstick), using all OEM parts, there was no made in China stuff, all good quality parts.
