I have an 1985 FXST and while this is not a critical need, I will appreciate any knowledge that gets offered because it stumps me.
I am trying to confirm the LINK COUNT of this bike and while all resources claim it should be 102 links I count 54 plates or 108 links for the currently installed chain.
The rear sprocket is 51 tooth but upon ordering a new 530 chain last fall, I just discovered it is too short while doing another fall project which was to include the new 102 link chain I previously purchased.
I don’t understand how even the dealership where the bike was originally purchased almost 40 years ago, showed it should be 102, but again it’s too short by 3 plates?
I believe the rear sprocket is stock and the 51 tooth count applies to OEM, I am stumped.
I would think a 108 link chain would require a larger sprocket or at least more than 51 teeth. The HD SM does not indicate # of links but does say 23 T front sprocket and 51 T rear sprocket.
