OK thanks for that @Schex This is all starting to make sense.
Is there an OEM Number for the Circlip or size? I think i can see where it should fit in the photo (will check when I get home tonight)
Also does this confirm the thinking that the tension on the inner primary chain when everything is tightened down is what stops the clutch basket from basically walking back towards the inner primary case?
I don’t see the clip offered from HD,
I’d get a new hub, I don’t have experience with any, but I see there’s aftermarket for about $100 compared to about $180 from HD
This is bloody epic guys!!!!! Thank you all so much for staying the course with me, especially in this last effort - I'd certainly lost hope!
That washer will not only stop the nut from pushing the clutch towards the inner primary (my big issue) but as its held in place with a circlip it will hold it in the right position.
Funny I did come across a comment about this "missing washer" but I ignored it as I couldn't see it on the parts diagram and figured it was for a newer bike.
I'll order a new bearing and nut as well and get an indie to refit it all as I dont have a press.
Thank you!!!!
You can put the washer back in if you have a circlip that fits, you have to put a bolt through it and tighten it up so that the washer is flattened, then you put it in (with the bolt still in place) add the circlip and then undo and extract the bolt. I have done it more than once.
Thanks @Spanners39 I am looking for a circlip to see if I can "lock" the washer into place on the existing clutch hub. I'm a bit confused by your comments about putting the washer in with a bolt so you can flatten it...unless you mean the washer is slightly concave and you need to flatten it to put the circlip in...which I think is what you mean.
I have the washer and it is slightly concave but it has been jammed onto the nut so I'll try and pry that off and then refit it all as long as i find a suitable circlip. It would give me an alternative if I have to ewait too long for the new clutch hub!
Attached photo of my nut and washer in situ.
Out of curiosity Ive attached the image I took of the "solution" I came across some weeks back in another forum but didn't think it was relevant to my clutch so ignored it!!!
Yes, it is concave, or convex, depends which way you are looking at it, but it should be marked "out" (or "oat" if you are Canadian) as in your pic. You can't get the circlip in if the washer isn't flattened.
Thanks @Spanners39 I have had to order a Circlip from Amazon so hopefully it will fit - the diameter of the washer for any future reference is 45mm or 1 3/4".
! I think I must have been extremely lucky in the 7 years of ownership that the clutch basket did not slip back towards the inner primary and seriously mess up the working in the inner primary etc!
