I dont know why some people insist on gorilla arming those covers. It only takes about 90-100 inch pounds to torque them down.
The first time I opened up the derby cover on my TC Electra Glide I twisted the torx bit so bad it was unusable because some nimrod had tightened it down too tight.

1. Kinda plain not to overtighten
2. So far i havent thrown any shade...... or shyte.... AND
3. Only interested in a resolution to the initial issue. If you find directness offensive that would not be my issue.....

Duh...Don`t over tighten the screws?

I know it sucks to wait but I would try the foam/aluminum type gasket before putting sealer. If you have to use a paper gasket, go with a non setting gasket dressing. This product works well for that (can get at any of your chain auto stores):
