Brand new battery on for the return trip. It didn't start the bike the morning I was to return. Got home Monday night and put on battery tender. Voltage was 12.6 or 12.7.

No voltage drop when bike died - I was on the Volts screen when it the bike died.

Haven't had a chance yet to check the other suggestions.

New battery is fine. Nose cone area was fine as thus had been changed out 2-3 years ago. Crossover line was fine as this was changed out 2-3 years ago and added a quick disconnect.

One area I noticed was the inline fuel filter (which would have been looked at during maintenance month on January) was dirty looking. That was an understatement. Very dirty small black crud came out.

Disconnected the fuel lne at the bottom and opened the petcock. Fuel dribbled out lime an old man at a urinal. Got a replacement from Autozone - amazing how their inventory records are terrible. $16 for the fuel filter.

Installed new filter and fuel shoots out the bottom. Ran bike for ~ 20 miles, stopped for a bit, and rode the 20 miles back at higher speeds. No engine cutting out. Followed my Dad's advice, "do the easy things first, as they're easy'.

Going to drain the tank through a strainer and take a look at the petcock screen and inside the tank.

Keeping the fuel filter as it caught a bunch of crap from inside the tank that got by the petcock screen. Which was also full on the bottom of the screen. Pictures were taken with an endoscope.

Ordered 12 fuel filters so I'll be ready.

The blacks stuff appears to be when the inside of the tank was treated. Not sure when, but most recent possibly 2009.

Over the winter I'm thinking of draining tje gas and running a hose with water at some pressure to knock loose any thing inside the tank. Then just let it dry for a bit and refill with gas. Any other suggestions if this is not a good approach?

That's rust.. You may have to send the tanks out to have them re-lined..

I'm not a fan of tank liners, Bob. If it was my tank I would treat the rust with phosphoric acid and perhaps a conversion coating. Those tank liners seem to eventually peel away and cause more problems sooner or later.

Agreed.. my OEM tank liner is loose in some areas.. every couple of year I try to clean it out.. never bothered to resealable it..
This is why i always try to keep my tanks full especially when stored over winter.. The lack of oxygen helps to prevent corrosion..

I've been running the tank low lately and not riding it as much. Generally I keep the tank full, which is what I'll do for winter and treat the fuel with Star Tron Marine Erhankl Treatment.

If you're feeling ambitious over the winter you can always clean the tanks out yourself which is what I have done with nuts and bolts and only steel nuts and bolts so you can use a magnet to get them back out the filler.. Swish them around for a while to help loosen up all particulates maybe even use a rust remover, just make sure you seal up all the holes and then rinse the tank out real well with a soapy water solution to make sure you get all the oil and rust out of there.. You may have to rinse several times, and then blow it out with some compressed air and put it all back together and you should be okay for a while..

And honestly like most have sai, get rid of the fuel filter.. It just creates a lot of additional problems as you happened to endure.. If you clean your tank every couple years or so you'll be fine...
