I recall reading about the nuts and bolts, steel, to use on the inside of the tank. Already familiar with cleaning the inside of a gas tank with my Ducati.
I'm sticking with the fuel filter though. I had looked at it before my trip and thought it looked dirty. Already dated the new fuel filter and bought a dozen more. Just have to stay on top of it. R&R a fuel filter is much easier than dealing with cleaning out the carb.
Although I'll be pulling the carb apart this winter to check it out and clean it.
Glad to hear you got the problem figured out. Thanks for the update. To remove rust from your tank, I recommend draining, flushing with water then filling it with EvapoRust.
This product is not an acid, its not corrosive, will not damage the bare metal. Its a chelating agent that simply removes rust , all the way down to the metal. Its safe to handle and water soluble so after treatment you flush the tank with water.
Keeping the fuel filter as it caught a bunch of crap from inside the tank that got by the petcock screen./QUOTE]
Hard to argue with that ^
Not for Me.. Means the strainer is not in place or damaged... Kinda Like Rust...only real answer...Fix the Thing..

If you have enough rust in your tank to regularly clog the strainer and/or an inline filter, you need to address the rust in your tank, that is too much.
I am a fan of white vinegar, super cheap and will not eat your paint. 24 hour soak with a slosh every hour or so will get her done. Rinse with more vinegar, then water then gasoline and mount on the bike. $1 a gallon at the grocery store. I would reinstall the inline filter for about 250 miles just to get a visually indicator if you got it all out. After that if the filter stayed clean I would get rid of it, in tank strainer is enough for normal duty, good luck.
That's not enough rust on the screen to block fuel flow.
When was the last time you replaced the fuel line?
They rot out from the inside and send rubber bits into the float bowl.
