Default Pulley Question

Gonna ask a dumb question. On the bike I am building I have a HD OEM 1998 transmission. It has a 32 tooth pulley on it and I am going to change it to a 34 tooth. Rear pulley is a 65T. Motor will be close to stock. Is there any reason that a 34T pulley off of a 1993 Heritage would not fit my 1998 transmission? I am pretty dang sure it will, but wanted to check. I found a heck of deal on a NOS Andrew’s 34T pulley and wanted to check. And yes I have both the FSM and the parts manual. I even have the separate electrical manual.

The motor will be a 80” EVO. I fully plan on getting 0.01 over pistons, pumping up the compression a bit, and changing the cam. I am also looking at a motor that has been bored out with Sputhe jugs, a different cam, screaming eagle heads, S&S oil pump, and adjustable rods. The motor should be a 95 cubic inch motor. Either way, the transmission already has a 32 tooth on it. I may leave it be until I ride it. I own the 65T pulley and it is already installed on the roller. I was going with the combo I mentioned because I have told many times by very experienced EVO guys that it is the best way to lower RPMs at cruise. Like I said, I will probably just leave the 32 on there until I ride it and see. I am putting a belt drive on it, so it really isn’t that hard to change the pulley if I want.

What is the ratio on the primary? On a stock Evo I would leave it at 32.. If your going to build the motor a bit then a 34 would work but it all depends on what the primary ratio is....

At this point I have not purchased the primary. If I use a closed one, it will be a stock HD one for 1998 softail. I want a belt drive, and it would be a 2" BDL belt drive. I believe the ratio for that one is 1.32:1

The 1998 pulley is am improved design over the pre - '94-1/2. A '93 will fit, but they are prone to coming loose for no reason.

I just looked on bdl's website and yeah those are 1.321 primary ratio and by using a 32 tooth would be more than sufficient giving you a final ratio at one to one being 2.695 to 1 on the tranny your final ratio at 1:1 would be 2.695:1 which most likely is really going to make the motor lug.. If you go to 34 the motor is going to lug big time.. With a stock ratio set up for a 98 you have a 25/36 primary which is a 1.441:1 and the secondary is a 2.031:1 making the 1:1 drive ratio 2.92:1. If you went with a 34 tooth on the trans and a 65 rear pulley with the BDL setup it'll change the over all ratio to 2.53:1.. A stock motor is not going to handle that..

On the Sputhe cylinder engine being possible a 95" the spigot bores are going to be thin, spigot's are a weakness of a Evo. 92-98 are known to be the strongest in stock form of the Evo years, the spigots will be machined on this setup and weak again, do your homework on the overbore Evo.

I went to S&S cases to do the 3.645" bore with S&S 4.625 stroke..

-92 cases had crappy aluminium- not recommended for machining, and had porosity issues. I got one.
Not sure about 93 though- i think it was fixed.
