Welcome to the sight and congrat's on the fatboy of all my bikes I love my 98 fatboy the most. As for your question I would leave it out long enough to get it running and push it in and then use the throttle lock to set a fast idle until it warms up a little. Myself I swapped to an S&S super E carb and fixed the cold start problem.

what is the throttle lock, and where is it

Hello Big Jon,

I only use the enrichner in Florida when it is cold. I twist the throttle a few times then hit the start button until it cranks. Blipping the throttle to keep it running. Then set the throttle lock at a fast idle to let it warm up before I ride. Warm up before you ride is important. Throttle lock is beside the throttle. It looks like a star and you turn it to lock the throttle. Rest your hand naturally on the throttle and reach your thumb under the bar to the left of the grip. You will find it there. Welcome to the site.

I can't remember the last time I used my choke....maybe 10 years ago.....I put an S&S Super E on my FXEF in '93 and just give it 3-5 pumps of the throttle (accelerator pump), and then hit the starter button and not touch the throttle. The bike will start whether it is 30-degrees or 100-degrees. I then use the throttle to keep the revs around 1500 rpm for 15-30 seconds and then drive off. Instead of using the throttle to maintain a higher rpm after starting (for example, I have to run back into the house because I forgot something), I have barely cracked the choke a little, but if I leave it open for anything more than a minute, it'll definitely foul the plugs.

Welcome to the site
30 to 45 seconds,,,tops.
I do the same, then use the thumbscrew to hold the throttle open a little for another 2-3 minutes when it's cold.

Yes, this is the way I have always done it. Let it warm up before you head out.

I live here in Canada, and I can tell you I know what cold is all about. I have a 94 Heritage Softail. I can tell you she earns the name hog when she is cold. I find that it take my bike a good ten minuts to get nice and warm and idle down to a nice thumpy rumble. I just put new pipes on and a hot cam installed. I was gonna get her rejetted but I think I'll hold off till spring cause I am trying to get the girlfriend to buy me an S&S super E carb for christmas. Though I'll bet a paycheque it will be cheaper to buy it myself. You know how woman think.
I guess you really have to let the bike tell you when its warmed up enough to idle down. It takes a while for heat to make it to the carb and to get the oil hot. If you need to get there quicker, take the car.
Its getting cold here in Canada. I just put the bike in the basement for the winter I don't want to get raindeer **** on her when Santa makes his rounds.

The longer you own your bike the better you will get to know what it wants, and how you will deal with her.You might want to richen the mixture up a tad to overcome the cold start problem.

On the right grip, a little twist **** that locks the throttle. (manual cruise cntrl)
I don't use it unless on the hiway.Follow the other cold advice above.

You messed with the idle screw, set this to idle around 9.5- 1000 RPM, when at operating temp.
Enjoy your new ride. My FX is great on the left side too, only thing... the cars on the right are going the same direction.:

Hey Big Jon,How ya doin? I've got a 95 dyna glide and I ride all year round here in Oklahoma. For the last couple of months, it's been cold. I ride daily to work and around town in 22 degree plus weather. I always pump the throttle once on cold starts, and close the choke all the way. After I ride for 3-4 miles, I open the choke half way and ride another mile or two to the highway. Once on the highway, I open the choke all the way. After I go 8 miles, and come to a stop, it idles fine. the last half a mile to work,it really runs good. My EVO motor is very cold blooded. After a 20 mile ride on a cold day,and you shut the engine off for longer than 20 minutes, It's cold all over again. I agree with DOG155, after you've gotten used to it, it will let you know what it wants. Bundle up !

Hopefully someone can answer my question. My 85' is very cold blooded, To start the bike, I kick it through about four times to prime it with gas on and with the enrichner (ignition off). Then kick it once and starts on the second kick. Then immediately push in the enrichner and keep the bike at a decent idle to warm up. How bad is this for the bike?

- I think that the general idea is to get a 'method' that
starts the motor with the first-press of the starter.

- and , second ,to minimise the use of the choke.
