Have an 89 custom and have had no problems getting mine on and off, other than previously mentioned, a little tricky getting them back on, gotta have just the rite angle.
Well like Blown 331 said......Pretty easy removal. Think draining the tank and etc took more time than it did to remove the rocker covers. No problems but I found front and back gaskets like in the picture I posted. Got the new gasket kit with the metal ones. Some of the bolts were easy to remove and other were still torqued down. Well this way when it goes back together everthing will be torqued to spects.......boy oh boy...I wish I had the bucks to put a big bore kit in....just pull the carb and the heads and etc......ah maybe next year
Oh another question.....would it be advisible to retorque the heads while I have it down this far or leave well enough alone? Ah did a search and seems I should leave them alone if I am not having any problems....which I haven't had
Do not re-torque the heads. They are torque to yield fastners: Torque + 1/4 turn. If you're not going to replace the head gasket or base gaskets...Leave 'em alone.
I've replaced the rocker box gaskets too many times to count on my 93 FLHS. I finally got the problem corrected...I had a warped section. Check with JP Cycles or any of the other catalogs out there. They make a special rachet style wrench for the EVO boxes: http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup...ley&page=1 Although, I too just cut down an allen wrench to it between the box and frame.
Put the bike up on a jack or a stand so you can rotate the rear tire so the valves are closed on the jug you're working on. I recommend doing one at a time.

Youdot not torquejugs like your car, Hackd is right. The reason some some bolts hard to take off and some easy might be due to electrolisis ( not sure of spelling) and mixing aluminum parts and steel parts like the bolts/studs. Anyway you are working with aluminum and not a hard metal there is not a torque to tightenjugs up all of the way. Evos have the near same specs as airplane motors and as Hackd said do not forget the anti-seize again steel and aluminum or youmay torguebolts wrong.
For torques specs consider your Evo a airplane motor and not your car motor.
Thanks guys......really forgot about the anti-seize. Great reminder. Going to be installing an S&S E carb that I bought from one of the members here. Once the tuning is done I think it is going to run great.
