Default HD to non hd lubes

Everyone knows that it's not mandintory for you to use HD oils/lubricants.... the Stealer is not going to come to your house and take your bike away if you don't.
Now the question remains. What are the non HD equivelants for:
HD Part #98853-96 transmission lube
HD Part #99887-84 chaincase lube

I know the engine oil, that is a Duh for me but the others always get me mixed up. Oh yeah please don't tell me just to use sytheticin all. that is not what I'm asking. Thanks

Hello Herb,

Here is what I put in 98 wideglide.

Mobil 1 75-90 syn gear lube. It sure shifts smoother.

Shell Rotella T 15w40 for diesel in the primary. Just started using this. Have always used the HD oil, but don't want to support Chavez's Chitgo.

OOOooopps you said no syns. Sorry about that.

badherb,
I pulled out the paperwork that came with my Baker tranny. I'm pretty sure what they recommend will work for you as well.
Red Line 75W250 Heavyshockproof Gear Oil
Spectro 75W140 SPL
Bel Ray 80W90
Torco 85W140
AMSOIL 75W90 (Not sure but this is probably a synthetic)

I imagine that almost any oil will lube your primary chain adequately, but it depends on whether your clutch likes it or not.
The Barnett clutch I am using requires Type F tranny fluid and that lubes the chain/clutch hub bearing just fine.
You might want to call an indy shop and ask what they use.
Good luck in your search.

thanks guys I'm not apposed to synthic.... just not going to use the same synth oil in everything. Most enginers and mechanics will tell you that each oil provides a different and important type of lubrication. that is my point I want to use what each item needs and is designed for.

I use a good quality synthetic gear lube in the tranny and red ATF in the primary (the color helps to sort out any leaks). And Kendall 20w50 dino in the oil bag.
My bike's got over 130K and no problems because of these lubes yet.

Red line Heavy in the tranny, what a difference
Don't get motor oil anywhere near your clutch some guys have but it depends on the clutch and how much you push it. Baker, S&S, Rivera all recommend ATF. If you think about it that makes sense as the clutches in an auto tranny are very similar to the ones in a harley. There are some jap bikes with wet sumps that the engine tranny clutch etc use the same oil but I suspect the clutch plate material will be different. During my mechanics training one of the things mentioned is motor oil will have a tendency to swell clutch plates over time but some of the guys on this forum swear by it? I sure wouldn't. I use Mobil 1 Vtwin 20/50 in the engineas when you study oil test results that one is always at the top. At work we use a special formulated synthetic oil in our engines and when you tear them down after over 40,000 hours they are in great shape, other engines that use a non synthetic oil sometimes don't even make it that long. In the sceme of things oil is cheap use the best you can find and change it often.

Amsoil 20-50 Motorcycle Oil & filter- Engine.
Will switch to Amsoil in Trans next change (not sure which weight).
ATF in Primary. The argument about clutch pack facings makes sense, plus I've got a case of it around here that I don't know what else to do with it.

Been using Amsoil 20+ yrs in autos with no probs.
