Default 1988 FXSTC trans ?

Hey guys great site.
I've got a 1988 FXSTC with a bad trans. a bearing went out and traveled all over the gears. I don't know how but, It still ran fine. It might be the Amsoil I was running.I found the damage while installing a new clutch cable.
I am looking at an Ultima 6 speed as an option. What is the difference between the years 88 and 89? All the models seem to go 84-96 or something. Or 89- 96. There are a lot more options on the later years.

Thanks for your help
Mark

Mark,

From all the info I can gather, there was a complete trans changefrom 1988 -1990, The case is different, main shaft is tapered as was the 4 sp. even the counter shaft is different. I don't know if you could mount a 90-96 model trans to you bike. If so you would have to replace the clutch pack and maybe some other parts.Might cost more but at least you would have a upgraded trans. Sorry I no more help trhan that.

Not sure what that statement means, are there pieces jamming the gears or what?

Yeah, and how would you find that when installing a new clutch cable? Did you pull the side cover and see damage? If it was just the throw-out bearing blowing up, which I thinkis all you can see if you pull the side cover, I'd just stick another on it and not worry about it. The magnet should have caught the pieces in the bottom.

One of the roller bearings rolledout with the oilwhen the side coverwas removed. So we removed to topcoverto see what we could see. From there we could see that fifth gear was chipped , bad , on the main and the counter rotating shaft. So after taking everything from the case, we cam see damage to all the gears. Fifth was the worse. No teeth missing, but a lot of chips missing. All I really noticed was a slight whine in 4th gear.

I was told today that an Ultimatrans will bolt right in, but I need to upgrade the clutch to a splined shaft from the keyed shaft. All I need is the newer clutch cage. Do you guys agree?

I agree that you would have to get another clutch basket and clutch to fit the splined shaft. Also would you not have to get a belt pully to fit the ultima splined shaft such as a 90-96 pulley. what about the race for the inner primary bearing ? no that comes with the trans. I guess all you would need is a 90-96 clutch basket and clutch pack.

Who told you that the Ultima would fit. Did you call Jireh or a distributor ? I hope...
