After reading a couple threads about needing to be hauled to a shop, I decided to check and see if I had towing insurance on my '86. After calling State Farm, they don't even off it on motorcycles!

So I'm wondering if you guys have towing insurance, and what companies you guys have for bike insurance. I probably won't be switching my car/truck insurance over, just the bike.

 

Progressive. They will haul in a 50mi rad.

 

I use the Road America road assistance program offered for HOG members but I believe it is offered in some form to non-hog members too. I have not needed to use the service lately but a friend who has it was not happy with service during a breakdown in arizona last year. I have used it 3 times in the past 15 years, once in Indiana (alternator), in Arizona (clutch release)and in So. Cal (clutch release) and was happy with the service each time. My last use was about 4 or 5 years ago.
I see that AAA Auto Club also offers road assistance for motorcycles. My friend who had a problem with Road America ended up using AAA during the AZ breakdown since Road America couldn't provide servicefor some reason and the AAA towing service worked out there. I am considering switching to AAA road assistance for the bike next time I am ready for renewal because last time I renewed with Road America I upgraded the service to add my car to the program but they screwed it up anddidn't even renew me for the motorcycle.After numerous phone calls they were so incompetent they could never figure out how to upgrade me (even though they sent me a form in the mail offering to upgrade) but gave memotorcycle-only coverage. I gave up trying to staighten it out after too many phone calls and just got AAA for the car.

 

I have Allstate through KOA in addtion to the service HOG membership provides because I read many posts from people not satisfied with Road America , but I have no idea if the KOA-Allstate service is really any good. I do know they try to lock you in and make it more diffilcult to leave. However, they claim to cover any type vehicle, on road or off, RV or motorcycle. http://www.koa.com/rvroadhelp/

 

I just called AAA and to join, put the wife on, and cover the bike was $129/ yr. At that rate, if I don't need towed for two yrs and then pay out of pocket, I think I've probably saved money.

 

You are probably right, I have it mainly to have someone to call.

 

I've never had to use it but FOREMOST INSURANCECOMPANY has towing and roadside assistance,a 1-800number and 23,000 service providers nationwide.

Do you guys have a sepatate policy for your bikes and another for your autos? Our auto insurance last year was through the Hartford and the bike policy through Foremost. When our policies came up for renewal, our independent agent switched us over to Southern Auto Owners. They are a reputableAM Best rated company, so we decided to switch over.

The bonus was, we could add the bike to our auto insurance policy as a third vehicle. Same limits of coverage and benefits apply to the bikeas to our autos. We saved over $300.00 on the auto portion and $200.00 on the bike portion for the same coverage from a year ago. BTW, That's with uninsured motorist coverage and a declared $15,000.00 value on the bike.

Might be worth looking into with your current agent, or if you do not have one talk withone.

 

Our Auto insurance is through USAA (unfortunately they don't do bikes)

90 - Buick Regal Custom (liability)

Total is about $1,100 a year (and that's carrying one of my daughters too)

Bikes are with a local indy (using Dairyland)
95 FLHTCU Ultra Classic (full coverage, declared value of $10Kw/ $3k custom accessories rider)
08 XL1200L Sportster (full coverage)

Total is about $880 a year

We did a LOT of hunting and price shopping and felt like this was as good as we could do for now.
