I just received my new HD chrome fork sliders for my 98 FXSTC. I've got new drain screws and washers, a new billet fork slider dust cover and fresh fork oil, but what else do I need to effect the changeover? By this I mean what seals and/or bushings? I've got a manual which I'll be disecting and I'll be doing the work myself but I've never torn into the forks before.
I'd replace the seals and bushings. Upper slider bushing, lower slider bushing, slider seal. One each for each side.
Oh, I'd also get 2 new "socket bolts". The ones that hold the damper tube to the slider. You'll booger the old ones up when you remove them. I wouldnt try it without an impact.
I always replace both the upper and lower bushing and the seals, Do you have something to install the bushings, I have the tool to install the bushings but used a homemade one for years!
You will need a piece of 2"pvc pipe to use as a seal driver, just split it down the middle and oil it for ease of getting it on and off. I just used my old seals, they weren't leaking, so I used them, no problems. I highly recommend the impact to remove thesocket screws at the bottom of the fork, I made a tool to remove them. I cut off an allen wrech and stuck it in a socket, but you can buy those long socketed allens too. It's a fairly easy job......here's what it looks like when finished........
