I was one of the few people that did not think the Metzler tires were any better than the Dunlop. Although the Metzler did handle rain grooves better they also would slip on slow turns on rare occasions , something I did not like at all. Every Harley dealer has Dunlop tires in stock whereas the Metzlers took longer to get. I am currently using the Harley engraved wide white wall Dunlop.
I've got Continental Milestones on my 89 Ultra. I've got almost 2000 miles on them so far. They were a big improvement handling-wise over the stock Dunlops, but it remains to be seen how they'll do for longevity.
IMHO,
You need to really check the road conditions out where you live and do most of your riding. Talk to some folks at bike nights and weigh different opinions. Check with your local Indy's and see what they recommend.
Where I live in SW Florida, my community has alot of shell roads with a mixture of good asphalt and interstate. In myenviromnent, the Avon will bite better, but wear out faster. The Dunlop is a toss up depending upon which modelyou buy.Dunlops are reliable, but are not known for their wear or longevity charicteristics as I well know.
After doing all of the above, l chose the Metzeler 880 for my environment even though it is a harder compound. Icould not be more pleasedwith the performance andwear I am expeirencing. I will advise you though, be extremely careful until you scuff them in. They are very slick and can be a little scary until broken in.
