damage from misadjusted pushrods?

I've adjusted pushrods on a freshly rebuilt '94 evo, after a thermal break in, when I noticed a loud tappet noise.
I made them nice "finger tight", totally forgetting about bleeding the tappets. As a result I had tappet pistons all the way up.
So, when the engine is cold, they run nice and quiet, but as it warms up, the tappet noise gets definitely way too loud.
To make the matter worse, I've done 100 miles like that, wondering what the hell is the noise about.
So, my question is: should I look for some damage at this point, or should I simply adjust them properly, and then if I don't hear anything suspicious anymore, just assume that everything is fine?

My way is a little more work and time consuming, but it insures that everything is right and done correctly. Make sure to allow enough time for the lifters to bleed down on the front cylinder before starting on the rear. If all goes well then lesson learned. If not, then maybe a lifter or two has collapsed and needs to be replaced. Good luck with your decision and keep us posted.
