i found another thread where the person pointed out that a wider tire might fit it would touch the belt, something i wouldnt of thought of. anyway i went with the stock dunlop #401 130/90-16. i had replaced both front and rear tires 6,000 miles ago with maxxis tires, $135.00 to my door with a new front tube and liner, whooo have they gone up in price. anyway i think ill go with a metzler or avon front when needed.
That person would be me... and as I said previously the vendor is telling me he has mounted 150 rear tires on '99 softails w/o any problems and mods, wheels are on their way so I'll tell you for sure if the 150 fitted ok... I hope this guy is right...
I put a 140 on my '94 WG and it looks like it touches the belt.. Doesnt, but its damn close.... I'd really like to go with a 1-1/8 pulley/belt the next time around so I can put that 150 on.. The 140 was about 3/8 of an inch wider (10mm). Made a big difference in the look, especially when I modified the tag bracket and handling is still great, though I didnt notice much of a difference..
well im getting a dunlop #401 130/90-16 tomorrow and have it changed thursday. still gets me that the maxxis only lasted 6,000 miles. i dont care what power or street conditions are that seems like way to short on the thread life. i mean its not like i did burn outs all day, just putting down the highway.
Depends on what bike, and what tire. The measurements the tire makers give are far from accurate. A Dunlop 491 MU(140)/90-16 fits my FXRS; a Dunlop 404 140/90-16 does not.
Something to consider... I put a metz 140-90-16 on my custom. I have a lowering kit. That 140, is almost 3/4" taller. Now, the bike bottoms out and the tire has rubbed through my fusebox. Width shouldnt be a problem, even with a stock belt. But check your height. Im not happy with mine, and im going to switch to a dunlop mu85. (i think)
Check the tyre manufacturer's website. I use Avon Venoms on my bike and the rear MT90 is actually 133mm, about 1/8 inch wider than spec (the front is 136mm). Mine just polishes the belt guard.
Avon's 140 is actually 143mm wide, which with the belt guard trimmed away will just about clear the belt I reckon. I plan to try one next time I change tyres, but expect to have to butcher the guard!
