Hey guys I have a 89 FXR, when I put bike in 1st gear and pull on the clutch I can still feel the bike wants to creep forward.

I can put my feet down and this prevents the bike from moving. So with that being said is this normal or should I adjust the clutch so there is no movement at all when I have the clutch depressed?

I don't have any slipage from going gear to gear.

At the clutch lever try to get as little as 1/16" free play,Harley says 1/8".The bike should not move with lever depressed.

 

Has it been sitting long, and what kind of oil is in the primary?

Shouldn't drag if it's up to specs, though you may feel a little drag first time out of neutral on a cold start. And that type of clutch usually engages with the lever almost all the way out.

The cable adjustment does the same thing as the center screw (on the clutch hub) as far as adjusting the free play. That screw is a 9/16 sae thread and I've seen a couple break over the years.

Also, something nobody ever talks about until it's too late - there's an 18.00 bearing between the clutch basket and hub. If it's going bad, that'll make it all drag but not cause any trouble when the clutch is engaged. They seldom fail and generally get very noisey when they do. If you end up removing your clutch discs you need to check it.

 

if it was mine id loosen the cable then remove the cover on the primary so i could adjust the adjuster on the clutch basket, then adjust the cable. at least thats the way i have always done it and havent had any problems. i believe thats the way your suppose to.

I did follow the manual to adjust the clutch, I was just asking about a little drag. If I engage the clutch it works fine. I just have a very slight grab when the clutch handle is all of the in and only in 1st gear.

I will have another go at the adjustment.

Had this problem with an aftermarket racing clutch,it turned out to be the wrong clutch plates.The Co.sent a different designed set problem solved.A lot of times it is the oil that will not drain from the plates fast enough when the lever is depressed causing a little drag.Good Luck

 

If all you have is a very slight creep which can be easily controlled by a brake or your foot, your ok. Now, if you want to stop it entirely you should just readjust your clutch. Personally, I set mine like you have yours and there is no problem. When I say a slight creep I mean when you put it in gear it kind of jumps a little. Now if it moves forward three or four inches you need to readjust.
