Default belt dressing?

Is it a good idea to use some sort of Pig Spit or something like that on the final drive belt? I suppose it's rubber and you don't want it to dry or crack, right? I ask because after my tire was changed I seem to have a squeak now when I roll it that I think is coming from the belt. How tight is too tight on these belts? Thanks

I wouldn't put it on there. It will probably sling off, Mine squeeks too but don't here it when I ride. My dad had a scharde of glass puncture his belt, broke three of the strands that run through the belt. He put another 20,000 miles on it and a trip to sturgis before replacing it. They are strong.

No to belt dressing it's not like the family car's "rubber" belts but special construction. Dressing will attract dirt, sand, and dust which will cause accelerated wear and breakage. Ignore the squeak it's probably the brake pads anyways; mine makes scraping noises sometimes. Normal. PS: don't use belt dressing on them either LOL!

Another no, here. The best thing to do is keep it washed. I rinse mine off really good during every wash. At 73k miles, my belt and pulleys still look great.

i know back in the 90's harley had something that you would put on the sprocket or what ever they call that now days. you would put very little on but it went on the inside. but i haven't seen it for a long time .so they may have found that was not good to use. i would agree with everybody to keep it real clean.

Say NO to belt dressing As far as adjustment I adjust mine cold 3/4 in 10# force ( I live on dirt roads) Had a small stone punch a small hole in the middle of the belt 45,000 miles ago still going good at 65,000 miles

I remember HD's belt dressing long ago.. Didn't seem to be around long..
That ought to say enuff right there..

I never used it, & don't think adding any dressing on a belt is good..

I just keep mine clean & adjusted properly, still going at almost 130,000 miles.....
Guess that means my FatBoy is "broke-in" ......

I had my belt giving me a squeak, & I checked my alignment & made adjustments & the squeak went away...

Talking

Just looking thru my J&P cycle catalog & found:

"Gasgacinch Gasket sealer and Belt Dressing".

Describes it as "Top quality sealer & belt dressing. Recommended by Harley Davidson*......

Well, I knew HD was recommending using something long ago..

But You won't catch me using ANYTHING on my rear belts..............

One of the best things about a Harley is the lack of the need to lube and clean a chain...
