Default engine noise - 1985 flt evo 5spd

Got a sound like marbles in my left side cover .. Maybe the chain sombody said but i took the inspection cover off and all looks good .. ?
I bought the bike and herd the noise.. Dint think much of it but when its warmed up its really loud. I was running about 45mph and all of a sudden i felt a vibration come on. Could feel it in my foot boards ..

Any Ideas ?

Clutch basket area should be looked at after just being sure the chain is ok. You do have a spined shaft and the old hd clutch hubs are not the greatest of idems and do sooner or later give up. If that is what it is, start lookn to primo for replacements.

abearcarver,
It could be that your compensating sprocket assembly has come loose, worn or the spring has failed. I'm thinking you are going to have to pull the primary cover to find out what is going on. If it's loose, tighten the nut up and perhaps all will be well. If you want to be sure you nail the problem, take it off the bike to inspect it for wear. If you don't know what you are looking at, definitely take it to a shop or friend who does know. Those things do wear out and the damage may not be immediately evident to someone who has not seen it before.
If you do pull it all apart, you will have the clutch off the bike and you can check it out for wear at the same time. The chain tensioner in there may have an issue too that you can't see until you open the primary up.
I hope it ain't nothin' serious...

From the noise you described, most likey the compensator "washer." It's the big thick part just under the nut on the crank. It has beveled metal springs inside that hold pressure against the crank/cam drive arrangement. The design is to reduce shock and vibration between the engine and transmission... and they will break on ocassion (on the inside of themself). You cannot repair them, they must be replaced.

Use a 1 1/2" socket and you'll likely have to foul the works by putting a bar of some nature, caty-cornered between the front sprocket and clutch hub sprocket. A 3/8 drive extension works well. It's a right-hand thread (normal thread) If it comes off real easy as in like it was loose already, take it all the way off anyway and inspect the threads of the nut. And when you go back with it all, use Loctite on the inside of the nut. (They will come loose sometimes if they weren't properly installed at the factory)

If you're not sure about the conditions or how to check things, keep posting, we'll keep you up to speed

PS: you have a tapered shaft on the clutch hub and they're a bit of a trick to easily taking them off, if you have to go that far. They did not use splined shafts until 1990.

Worst possible case is one or more of the alternator magnets has come loose. This might show up as magnetic particals sticking to everything. You could check your voltage and see if it is 13.5 above 1500rpm's. Or check the AC volts by disconnecting the voltage regulator and see if you get somewhere around 35 to 45 volts AC. Each system is a little differnt and I don't have the book on your bike.

Hope this ain't it. Hard fix and expensive.

Could be bearing on clutch shaft easy fix and cheap.

Good luck maybe neither. Loose bolt or some other crap in primary. Just pull the cover and look around.

Good point Kabear, I didn't even think to mention that. And all are correct, first thing to do is pull the primary cover, cause ain't nothing gonna get fixed till that happens
