92 Softail with 30,000 on a top end job. Sat for about a year but rode a lot this summer. Smokes out the rear pipe some when it's a little hot in traffic and slow speed. Hard to tell if it's blue or grey, kinda both but don't smell like gas. Use no oil and starts and runs good. Plugs look good compared to pictures I seen in a book. Somebody said carb and another said rings????
From what I have experienced with EVO motors a little smoke is not a major deal. My 96 softie did the same, plugs were always super clean, in fact I think it was running a bit lean which may have caused it higher cylinder temps and burned some oil. The motor burned some oil 1/2 qt or so in 1200-1500 miles.
Run one finger inside the exhaust at the tips, use another finger on the other, compare. Both pipes should equally have a light smooth sooty gray or black deposit, normal for a bike that age. If one is more sooty or the desposit feels more oily in nature than the other you could be going through a value or ring in one cylinder or another. If it starts to puff blue-white smoke continously and you get a heavy oily residue in your pipes than I would get concerned and have a mechanic look at it. You have to remember you have a 17 year or motor that really hasn't been run that much, 30K is not a lot of miles for 17 years. It will be much happier if it runs vs sitting.
Also since it sat for a while you may have a plugged oil screen or some sluge in the channels. Pull the oil screen and clean it. Add a good quality motor flush or some Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil tank and run the bike for a couple of hundred miles and change the oil and filter. When you change your oil make sure that you get all the old oil out of the sump in the motor, it will store a little less than a quart of oil that will never drain out the tank. So you always end up with a quart of old oil mixing with your new oil. There are devices you can buy which will get that last quart out. Check out Rougechopper.Com. It repalces the oil filter with a machined catch with a hose which runs into your catch basin. You connect, fill the oil tank with fresh and run the bike until the black oil turns clear, shut down, replace the device with a filter and refill the tank with the lost quart of oil. Simple and very effective. You can also just do the same thing and use a catch made from an old 2 quart plastic sode bottle with the bottom cut out but the device makes it much cleaner and you don't have to hold the bottle and try to shut the bike off at the same time. That could get messy. Also put a little MMO in your gas every 2 or 3 tank full, it will clean your carb and will burn through your motor and lube the upper clylinder and clean the value stems. Some say it works some say it doesn't but I have used it for years in all my motors and it hasn't hurt. Its just a light weight oil like transmission fliud with a detergent in it.
mine started doing the same thing but plugs look great. not going to worry about it until it really smokes. after all it would be a shame to find out it will do this for 50,000 miles before it really starts to smoke bad.
It just started leaking oil from the bottom of the rear cylinder, so I guess have to charm my boyfriend into taking it all apart for me
Ok, that's a base gasket issue and common in earlier Evo motors. I've had two sets in my 1992 over the years. My brother's Heritage went through at least a pair or two as well.
