The stock petcock went bad so I put one of these on. Now I have to hit reserve after only 2-2.5 gals consumed. The tank is 5gal. I haven't run it empty yet to make sure I'll get all 5 out. I don't want to be on reserve for 2+ gals though.
Can I cut shorten the tube that goes up into the tank by maybe 1/2" or so? Where does the reserve part come into play on this valve, and will I damage it by shortening it? I didn't take off the filter screen because I didn't want to mess it up.
Yeah, Pingel is the way to go. Jireh has them cheap, too. I put one on the Sportster, then went EFI the next year, so I just leave it in reserve now and nylon tied it in place because we have a fuel pump, of course. But, yes, you can cut the tube down. I'm not familiar with your exact valve, but they all work on the same principle: The long tube is the "primary" suction point and the "reserve" is at the bottom. So, just cut it down to the same length as your original one and it should behave the same way, and next time get the Pingel.
The Accel on my 93 FXLR works exactly the same as yours. Went 96 miles on a full 4 gallon tank and had to hit the reserve. We had planned to go 100 and check what she took anyways. The tank filled a 2.8 gallons with a high performance engine after running 23 miles on reserve. The question is, what's wrong with that and having an extra reserve capacity??
Fortunately my riding parner and Bro has a dresser with 6 gallon tanks, so we can pull fuel out of his in an emergency if needed. We have been doing longer runs each weekend to test and find the actual capacity.
BTW, I bought the Accel after my Pingle took a dump over 1 1/2 years ago. I'm still waiting for the replacement to arrive on the "Lifetime" warranty.

It seems that the som of the o-rings in the older petcocks doesn't like the new ethanol fuels and die after being exposed to it for a while. We contacted Pingel and purchased the tools and rebuild kits so that we could service our customers better. I am not sure but we believe that Pingel "batches " their warranty work. They wait until they have a quantity of them and put a tech on them for a day.
I don't think the "reserve" is actually a separate tube; I only see one. Could the lower portion of the tube have small holes in the side of it to let in the gas? How does the reserve setting work?
Regarding when I switch to reserve, I want that to be at about the 1gal level. If it's 2gals or more, it will be harder to guess when I'm going to actually run out.

I beieve he was refering to your original valve tube length. If you make them identical, they should perform identical. The tube is normal, the open hole should be reserve.
