Tach issue
1992 FXDC tachometer all of a sudden started reading over400 rpm higher than normal. All across the band. 70 mph has always been about 3400 and now it is reading 3900 to 4000. Idle sounds right but it is reading about 1400. It is an electronic tach. Do these things go bad or is it the sending unit? The manual (both shop and Clymer) are really lacking in any information on this. Ideas?

There is no sending unit. It picks up off the coil.
Check your voltage regulator. It is probably putting out way over 14.xV, like 15.x to 17V. Be on top of this real soon or your battery will be shot next.

Put the VOM on AC volts and make sure you are seeing 14.6V DC and not AC. Shorted diodes will do that. I only suggest this because I had the exact same thing happen when my regulator blew out, taking out 2 batteries. On the road. Otherwise, I suppose the tach could be bad.
