Default Tranny Vent

Hey all,
Bike's been runnin great since my clutch issue was straightened out, thanks again to everybody, quick question though, 88fxr, I'm noticing tranny fluid is coming out of my tranny vent hose. Not alot but enough that it is noticeable on the inner part of the swingarm where it is routed to. Is it normal to have some fluid vent out, and if not is this a sign of a major issue starting? Thanks again.

It is not normal for fluid to come out the vent, unless there is too much fluid in the transmission.

It only holds 1/2 quart (16 ounces) and you have to have the thing perfectly level to use the dipstick at all. If you're absolutely certain it's correct and still have the problem, get back to us.

Whoa that'll get me 30 days in the electric chair for sure

It's definitley coming out of the vent hose, I can tell because the tranny fluid has a pink dye in it, the level is at the full mark on the dipstick, up to the 2nd hash mark.
I haven't changed the fluid since I got the bike (I know bad) but I've probably only put about 5000 miles on it. I've changed the engine oil twice though. It could be that it was over full when I got it because it's been venting fluid for a little while now and I would think that it would be low on fluid by now. I didn't notice this until I did my starter drive and pulled the starter out, when I reinstalled the starter I must have routed the tranny vent hose differently because I never noticed this before, now the end of the vent hose is right behind the foward part of the swing arm that is near the oil filter and the fluid is migrating across the bottom of the swing arm.

The vent hose should be a pre-bent rubber hook shaped hose that looks like a cane.

The FXRs of that vintage were not fitted with the cane shape hose. They originaly came out of the 90 degree fitting and regular hose went up and across the starter motor then down toward the swingarm.

No matter, there are only 2 things that will cause it to blow fluid out:
1 -overfilled.
2 - bearing seizure in the process and getting so hot the fluid is being boiled and foamed out. (you'd be having far more serious issues by now though) I've only seen that maybe 3 times in my life and only once was on a bike. Only one other thing could cause it, but it's so far out there I won't even mention it.

So, just keep a check on the fluid level, change the hose all together if you want, so that oil residue won't continue to slober over time.

And for heaven's sake - change you fluids once in a while, tight-wad!

HAH!! I knew I wasn't going to get off easy on that one! Anyway thanks for the info, I'm going to reroute the hose so the fluid can't migrate towards the belt, I'll probably just throw a new hose on altogether.
