Default Puffs black smoke! Valve seals

1999 evo. Puffs black smoke when started and deceling. Not near as bad when warm. Runs great just uses lots of oil and smokes? Is it the valve seals? Other sugestions? If it is the valve seals how bad are the to replace. I am wondering if you can pull the valve spring off with the head installed similar to a chevy small block?

ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Thanks in advance!
Josh

There are tools out there thatallow the springs to be removed without removing the heads. I would reccomend removing them so that the valves, guides and rings could be checked/freshened up.

Kinda what I been thinking... but it's using a lot of oil too. Compression test check certainly in order, but I'd be thinking about freshening up the whole top-end, rings included. I changed valve springs/seals once without pulling the heads on mine - never again...
