Motor mounts!?!?
Thanks a million! I was hoping you would jump in and you did! All you guys have given me VALUABLE information! Tommorow I think I will get out to the garage and try to move the motor! I am pretty sure a motor mount is bad! Question is,which one? Once I move the motor I should know. Oldroadie, thanks for taking the time to take the pics and explain step by step what should be done!
Our bikes use the same factory service manual so they're really similar. Just support the front of the motor with whatever's handy and loosen the two allen bolts holding the mount to the frame. If it moves back and leaves a large gap you'll know it's the rear mount; at least that's what I found on my '95. Seriously, though, the rubber is 13~14 years old and it's likely going south anyway so why not get ahead of the maintenance curve?

By the way does anyone else appreciate the fact that Doc Hess, who has helped numerous members with Evo problems and questions, isn't too proud to ask a question himself? This forum is one of the best resources for Evo owners on the web and it's because of guys like Doc, John, T150, Buddy and others who really go out of their way to share their knowledge. And now it looks like we have another in oldroadie. The Evo subforum is puny compared to others (even Off Topic for god's sake), but it's the best of hdforums without a doubt.
Yeah, John, that'd be a "Rubber Mount," versus "Bare Back." And the last study I saw (I don't actively look for them) said that "rubber mounts" had a failure rate of something like 30% or more in preventing HIV transmission.
mp,
I just try to help out. I don't know everything, but I do know quite a lot about quite a lot of different things, way beyond the Evo or even (shudder) Shovelheads. I've been riding HD's since 1979 and I bought my FLHT new 23 years ago next month. If I can share some of that knowledge and help someone out, that's what it's all about. I ain't too proud to ask for help either. And, BTW, I don't pass on "net wisdom" (stuff someone read somewhere on the net and passes on to everyone else like they are an expert on it.) If it is "net wisdom," and I think it may be accurate, I give a disclaimer of something like "I read on the net, take it for what it's worth."
Anyway, I don't have excess vibration, no sloppy feeling, everything feels right, I just get a klunk occasionally when I go over a big bump/hole. Fully loaded, I know I bottom out, but this year I built a trailer to take the weight off.

I get kind of a bottoming-out feeling thump when I hit big bumps, too ('92 FXRS), but no vibration or wallowing. I still assume it's a rubber mount going soft. Just started last year. Bike has over 140K on original mounts.
