Default avon tires

my experience
installed avon venoms on my 94 fxds
avon calls for 140 rear, stock is 130
the belt guard was right on the tire, not concerned too much about the rubber flap but there is a metal strip supporting the rubber flap, did not want to scrape a new tire
had to slot the guard and readjust so there was some clearance
anyone else run into this problem?

I just put on a set of Venoms this week on my 95 FXDS-C replacing the stock sizes, 100/90-19 front and MT90-16 on the rear (equals a 130/90) and had no issues. It's real close in there and I can see how adding 1/2" to the tire width in your case would cause some clearance problems.

Some tires have slightly different profiles, we've used the 140 Avons to replace lots of 130 Dunlops, sometimes you have to "whittle" a little and sometimes you don't. Be sure to follow Avons reccomended tire presures.

Great advice....
I contacted Avon via email, and fully described my bike, and it's approximate weight.
They suggested 41psi front and 45psi rear for mine.....here's the reply:

Dear Paul, you are correct in that Avon's do run a higher pressure due to the materials used in the Avon Tyre and the overall quality of this premium tire. I have attached a full line pressure guide for you to keep as a guide. Personally, I would rum 41 front and 45 rear. Your bike is heavy and needs the higher pressures.

I emailed Avon earlier this years about using a different rear tyre on my 1990 FLHS. They replied that in their view the 130/MT was marginal, especially when fully loaded and recommend using their 140. I have now fitted one and we had a great time touring Europe from our UK home (2,500 miles) in June. We travelled with a group of modern BMWs and held our own!

I removed the rubber skirt and metal strip from the belt guard, to provide clearance with the edge of the wider tyre. There is about 3/16 inches gap between belt and tyre. Maximum pressure for Venoms is 50psi. Fully loaded I reckon we weigh in at approaching 1200 pounds and I use 44psi front, 50psi rear. Solo pressures 38/44.

That gap makes it easy to adjust wheel alignment! Just ensure that clearance is maintained. Before I refitted the wheel, with the new tyre on, I looked down the edge of the tyre. There was only just a thin sliver of light between the back of the pulley and the tyre edges. So clearance between belt and tyre is effectively the thickness of the pulley flange.

Where can one find Avon's recommended pressures? Trying to find specs for a 140X16 rear and 90/100 front Venoms. The bike is a 93 FXLR and 95% of the time ride solo. I could not seem to find any pressures on Avon's website

Go on their site, there is a tire finder/selector for your make and model of bike. After you put in the needed info and hit enter it will show you the reccomended tire sizes and pressure. If you decide to go off table you will have to call and talk to a rep. Usually the reccomended pressure is the same as the reccomended one. Hope this helps.
