Default 1989 Electra Glide

Just purchased 89 an Electra Glide in Calif. It now resides in the midwest. It is in great shape with only 10,000 miles. There is a slight hesitation on acceleration once in awhile. It suspect it has Calif smog stuff on it. Should I get rid of that stuff. Any ideas on the hesitation? Also I am new to HD's.
Is there place to look up on the internet or this site a list of upgrades for this bike. I am not concerned about increasing power just reliability. Thanks.

I had an 1989 Ultra. My best advise is to change the carburetor to a CV carburetor if it has not been done. The CV has more up grades to increase HP that the original carburetor.

Removing the California Smog is just taking the Charcoal can out from under the seat and dropping the over flow line from the gas tank to the ground.

Agreed on the move to a CV. Then I'd throw on a better air cleaner and a good set of pipes just to open it up and let it breathe. After that, the rest is just personalization.

Congrat's on the new bike - I suspect you are going to love it.

If it has the horrendous California cam -178 degrees duration!! - I'd replace it with an Andrews EV13.

Hi dkfxr,

I also have an 89. After 20 years I finally decided to replace the Keihin butterfly carb with a CV so I picked up a carb off of ebay from a 2004 Road King (will be a project for this winter). If you decide to go that route you also want to get a solid manifold to replace the stock manifold (assuming this hasn't been done already since it's a popular upgrade). You will definitely want to replace the mufflers and breather which will require re-jetting whatever carb you have in it.

It's a great riding bike, enjoy.

Thanks for the info. I am new to H.D.'s but just did 1000 miles along the Northern California coast and loved it.

Everything already posted is good advice. The best single upgrade I made to mine when I first got it was to replace the butterfly carb with a late model CV. After that, I did the air cleaner and slip-ons for better breathing. After the carb swap, though, the next best single improvement was a Wood 6 cam. I've also replaced the stock ignition. But first you want to attend to that carb...

You're almost a veteran already! That's some ride so soon. Welcome and hi from the other side of the pond.

Bought my 1990 FLHS new and agree with the others. Simple mods are new mufflers and air filter. I fitted a jet kit to my original carb and an Andrews EV27, plus a Crane ignition module. Cams and ignition timing around that time were very strange, while Harley wrestled with noise and exhaust emissions!

Once I got round to further improvements I stroked and tuned my original engine. Now that has moved on for an S&S 107! Beware, these bikes can be real fun, but quite expensive! We'll help you spend, so don't worry - just keep coming back!

I have ridden a lot of miles but mostly on BMW's. This is a totally different feel but I have to say it was way more comfortable than my R1200RT. I think the seating position fits my size better. Missed the power though so I need to do some changes. Any upgrades avail for the breaks, or is this as good as it gets?
