Default oil filter issues

I have a weird problem that someone may be able to solve.

I bought a custom oil tank by Santee 20 years ago. It takes a spin-on filter. The vendor told me it takes a short sportster filter. Well, so does my 85 wide glide. I use a 172C from K and N.

I buy two different 172C style aftermarket filters but they only spin on about three turns. I tap one of the out to 5/8-18 and it spins on all the way. I want a 5/8-18 filter but K and N says 172C it is a metric thread 16X1.5mm.

These guys below say their tanks take standard 5/8-18 filters but I can only find metric filters.

http://www.steelthundercc.com/oiltanks.html
Part#:MU86042

Are the aftermarket companies cutting corners so to speak and making metric filters for Harleys?

Funny thing is, the tank is for a 1969 Triumph 650 twin. The only filter I can find on line that is 5/8-18 is a Triumph Spitfire filter but nobody stocks them locally.

What is going on?

Rob

Didn't the Triumph have the oil tank in the frame? The Bonneville I had did.

Anyway, the spin on filter for a Evo Sportster is the same as for an Evo big twin, and that is also the same as used on a RN Toyota Truck and Celica, say a 1986 Toyota Truck 4 cyl. I use OEM Toyota filters on my bikes. It is not a metric thread. The thread pitch is 3/4-16: http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlook...asp?Part=51348

That's the strange thing. I have a Custom Chrome filter in my hand, PN 26-109. Box says "XL Short Chrome, replacement for OEM 63782-80".

Here is a cross reference that I found:

Harley Davidson
OEM Part Number----------K&N Part Number----------Sudco Part Number
63782-80-----------------KN-172C------------------631-7172C

KN-172C is 16X1.5mm according to K&N website.
http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=KN-172C

But I have to run a 5/8-18 tap into the 26-109 for it to screw on, so it must not be 5/8-18. It must be metric like the 172C.

WTF

The threads are like new. It's only had one filter on it since I bought it. The stock oil tank was not in the frame. Oil-in-frame was in the 70s.

This is a Santee chopper tank.

I attached a pic that is similar to mine.

Yeah, I'm just-a-kid. I think that was a 72 Bonnie. I fixed it up and gave it to my friend as a wedding present. He heard about it at his wedding and wanted to skip the honeymoon and come home for the bike. He still has it, wife long gone.

I stopped by the Stealership and picked up a genuine 63810-80A filter. It was only 7 bucks, not bad.

The parts counter couldn't tell me the specs, the service counter couldn't tell me, the technician couldn't tel me. He said he could call tech services to find out tomorrow.

But it doesn't fit either. Spins on 3 and a half turns and stops. It's not 5/8-18.

I'll have to buy a spitfire filter on-line.

PH922A filter is a perfect fit. It's a little longer but same diameter. And damn is it orange on my bike! I may have to spray it black.
