Default evo mods

what are the best cost effective mods to do to increase hp. I already have a cam, pistons, pipes and intake. woud it be worthwhile to have the heads ported and polished. I could take the heads off myself and just bring em in.

I've been doing some reading and read about good added torque results with head work done. But have also read the EVO's arevery limited for modifications unless you go big dollars intothe motor.

I bought my 1990 FLHS new and have modified it through several stages. You don't list ignition module, so if you haven't done so replace that. The stock one has timing designed to keep noise down and holds full retard longer than needed, then switches to full advance. A new module will provide progressive advance and better performance. A new carb such as a Mikuni will also give better performance.

IMHO the last few drops of performance can only be had by using a dyno with a skilled operator. Also there are limits to how much you can do yourself. Good tuning shops earn their income from having better knowledge than any individual can get from the internet!

So you could look up a local tuning shop with a dyno and ask their advice. Talk to them face to face when they can find out what you would like to get from your bike and you can discuss how they can best help. If you already have a good mix of modifications, a dyno set up will get the best out of it. They may suggest a different combination of parts which will give better improvements and you can decide if you want to try them.

After doing similar mods to my bike as you have, I took the next step! I had my motor stroked, compression significantly increased, a yet different cam, gas-flowed heads, all by a local builder. That motor was sublime! Beautifully smooth, excellent torque. But even that was not enough and I now have an S&S 107.

So which way to go? I suggest you spend a little cash to get the very best out of your bike as it is. But be warned! If you continue tinkering with it you can soon find yourself spending the sort of money that will buy you a nice new ready built bigger engine, with big performance in a blink!

I live in the UK, where pricing for new engines is different to the US. Ultima engines are proving very popular with US HDH members, so do a search for more info here.

Also don't forget you can get more out of your bike in other ways, such a handling kit from True-Track (there are other brands), better shocks and fork springs, brakes....

Having written the above, I have just read the new topic:

John of Mia Cycles has answered your question better than I can!

You've already done the most cost-effective stuff. Head work is the next logical step.
And Evo's actually respond better to those type of mods than Twin Cams do, because of the limitations built into the TC heads, especially the 88ci, so they could sell tons of 95ci kits. Which most people had installed with the low flow heads still intact!
