I have this sound when in first gear, after that it goes away, Or maybe its too loud to notice after that. Runs fine but I don't chase every sound I hear anymore.

Yeah, maybe I shouldn't either, but it's a new sound to me and I've had the bike 8 years now, and the sound appears to be there all the time. Sort of sounds like it's coming from the primary but the chain is tight. It has a M6 auto chain tensioner. It does it in idle and in gear both.

Guys, be dang sure to check that pinion gear, take it off, clean it and examine witha magnifiying glass. I had one bad tooth where it had worn thru the hardness. My tick was gone after 3 years of maddness and frustration.

OK, dumb question from a car guy... What are you calling the "pinion gear"?

Right side flywheel shaft is the pinion shaft, sometimes called the gear shaft. There's a helical gear, that looks like a sleeve, which drives the oil pump gear shaft. The gear on the end of the pinion shaft drives the cam gear. Left (drive side) shaft on the flywheel is the sprocket shaft.

If the pinion gear is mismatched to the cam gear, they will either whine excessively (too tight) or click, if too loose. And of course a bad tooth on the gear will make noise and a cracked gear will cause a deep knock, though that's not a common failure.

Makes sense, thanks Rufus.

Seems I should have followed up on this post. Well the motor mount issue was someone tried to adjust the mount bracket, maybe to help with the high speed wobble that Touring bikes have, they put this too tight and it was causing exteme lateral pressure. Set up alignment on the motor to the factory spects and I have not broken another mount bolt. As for the ticking on mine it turned out to be the compensating sprocket. We replaced it with a new one and the noise is gone. The engine does have a slight tick still, but you can only hear it if you listen for it. I figured this is some what normal. Just a note, we ended up having to pull the crank out again, as the harley dealer did not have the correct alignment. It was causing the wrist pins to blow out. After 4 cylinders, I installed a different crank and that was over 40,000 miles with no more problems.
