Thumbs down need help, opinions on single fire ign.

I am thinking of changing over to a single fire ignition system and sure could use some input on which are good and which are bad. I have a 89 FLT with a Andrews EV-23 cam, slightly modified Keihin carb, and screamin eagle touring exhaust.
I am leaning towards a Dynatech system.

Do I need to go the PROGRAMMABLE route?
Is there something available that works with the stock coil and module?
Looking forward to any and all responses.
Joe

Single fire will require a new coil. You have a waste spark coil, that is, both plugs will fire at the same time because it's a single coil firing 2 plugs inside. The single fire coils are really two separate coils in one housing so that each coil fires one plug.

A new coil will be required. I've had good luck running a Crane HI-4E that plugged in place of the factory module. A coil and module don't take up much room on a road trip in case there is a failure. Dyna and other company's sell similiar units.

If you're looking into a nose cone mounted setup, that's all there is to it, other than the coil. There are programmable modules out there that utilize the factory pickup in the nosecone. And the "performance" modules WILL work with a stock coil - in that they have a compatible resistance. But as mentioned, a different coil is required for single fire operation. As far as the programming features, they are slightly different from one to the other. Some need a cable, computer and software to utilize all the features and some have changable setting that others do not using dials or switches. Lots of choices out there....

But hopefully this will answer your question; if you choose one that has programming switches or dials, and unless you have a kick start or are looking to super-fine tune to some specialized type of operation, what comes out of the box is likely all you'll want - no extra programming cables/software etc.

Here's a link to a thread from a while back. I'ts rather long but check it out, it may have some more info you can use:

I saw all those older threads but they were a couple years old and I am sure things have changed a bit.
Your advice is quite helpful and I appreciate your reply.
See my next posting about Carb suggestions ie. Mikuni HSR

Default Ignition.

Here's what Nightrider has to say about it.

They are a great source of information.
