Default Starting My winter project!

Hey guys,

Its been a few months since I last stopped in (crazy summer). I am excited to show off my new project and to get started. I would like to see what you all think! If I can get the pictures to upload I will show you what I have and what I am shooting for. I am not going to make a carbon copy but want to use it as a platform to start from. Any tips, Ideas, Comments, Whatever.

Sorry for the bad resolution on the bike in the garage.... I had it half way stipped before I thought of taking a pic. Then it was with my phone. My current bike is a 1997 Electa Glide Clasic.

Love the inferno bike although I'm not one for flames on my own bike. The black pipes are awesome. I wonder how long that coating lasts? I wrap my pipes cause I like the look but after a year or so the wrap turns to white and I like the black much better.

I suppose the only advice is to decide right up front if this is a trailer queen or a bike you intend to ride the crap out of. I think that makes a big difference in every decision you make as you build it.

What I can't figure is how your wife lets you start a bike build when you still have to paint the garage

Good luck and keep us posted.

LOL!!! Well she is a good gal all in all and the Garage is MAN only area (ya right) as you can see there is stuff piled in the background from her that drives me NUTSO!!

This is going to be a bike I ride fro sure. I sold my 05 Road King this spring and went back to the 97 because I like the feal SOOOO much better. Most people think I am nuts when they hear me say that but I never felt good on the 05 or the 02 I had. I can drag the floor boards around corners on this bike and my newer ones always wanted to stand up. That sucks when you live in the Black Hills and ride mostly hills.

Anyway, A few of the main points I am going to stay with the 16" wheels rather then the 18" or 20" that the picture shows. This is mainly because I think the taller wheels look cool but you lose some handling with the taller wheel. IMO. I got a great deal on some brand new Sturgis custom billet wheels and I think they are going to look sweet. I am having a little bit of trouble finding A/M parts for the 97...... Any place you guys recomend? I think the majority of my body parts are going to come from Klock Werks here in SD but I am trying to track down new fork sliders and break calipers (sp?).

I will keep you posted as things move along..... Probably going to take all winter $$$$$$. I got 4 kids. 1 in high school, 1 in middle school, one in 2nd grade and one in diapers..... Need I say more :-)

Just wanted to share a little with you guys. I have been lurking around for a few years now and really enjoy reading posts here. After I get done with the body work and she looks like I want I am probably going to put in the 107 Ultima after reading from posts here.

Take Care Guys.

Ha! Try finding parts for a '95, with the old frame! Even harder... if I had known then what I know now, I would have bought a '97 or '98. I have bought lots of parts on eBay, believe it or not - lots of NOS stuff on there... but like Forrest said, "you never know what you're gonna get (or find)." I've had good luck buying on eBay - never had the wrong part or a damaged part shipped, and never had to wait longer than 7 days. I've also bought stuff from M&M Cycles (mandmcycles.com), Phat Performance Parts, Bob's Biker, J&P, and many others. M&M says they are a buying co-op, and you usually get about a 20% discount on the brands they carry - including H-D. Bought my V&H pipes, Mustang seat, and other high-dollar stuff from them.

I would LOVE to do a custom build like you're doing! I've been reading a lot about new engines, and the Ultima 107 seems like a really good choice for a bagger. Wish I had the bucks to put one in my bike. Guess I'll have to settle for an EV-27 cam, chromoly pushrods, and maybe some head milling...

I think you're smart to stay with the 16" wheels, too. The more rubber on the road, the better she handles... especially for riding twisties, or even the hills where you live. I'm looking around for a 16" chrome spoke set because I just like the look of wire wheels on old school bikes like mine... but the American Wire Wheels are pretty damn pricey (about $900 a set). I sure don't want to put junk wheels on the bike though.

I don't know how you find the time for a custom build with 4 kids in the house! Mine are grown so I don't have to deal with that anymore, but a custom build is a LOT of time-consuming work that I for one am just not ready to commit to yet, much as I'd like to. I commend you for taking on a project like that. But hey, it IS winter, right?

Good luck to you! Please do keep us posted as to your progress. I might use it as inspiration!

Thanks for the encouragement! I have not gotten as far as hoped in the last couple months though. I had a change in jobs that forced me to slow down a bit.... I have located most of the body parts I plan to use from Klock Werks here in SD and they are only a few hours away so i am hoping after Christmas I will have a couple G's to play with and be able to get started.

I have found that the 2000 FLHT that I did a few years back was ALLOT easier to find parts for but I think the boys at Klock Werks are going to be able to fit me up. I have run into a bit if a snag with the tank most of all though.... I have the Magna fuel injection on this bike and want to get a stretched tank like in the picture but none of the stretched tanks will let me use the fuel injection. I was planning on going with the Ultima 107 after I get all the body work done may be next year some time after I am done with the main body build so I was planning on running the EVO for another season or two.
SOOO. I think I am going to carb out the current EVO so I can stretch out the tank now.

The wife is being supportive of the project so that makes life a bit better and as soon as I have the new body bought and dry fitted I will take a few snaps and post them.

Take Care!

Friends call me Doog.

At least Winter is good for one thing!

I also have started my winter project. I am re-painting my '86 FLHTC, although I am staying stock. Since I have a Limited Edition bike I am going to keep it looking like the factory version, with a few "upgrades", Polishing the forks etc.
Had the engine rebuilt last year, along with a 6 speed. This year she needs to look good!
