I've been north of 100. How far north, I dunno, as the speedo isn't too accurate. Crossed I90 one year at 4000-4200 RPM in 5th with a broke speedo. Just kinda kept it over 4K and went on. Fixed the speedo and realized that was about 95MPH. OOPS. Guess that's why I kept passing twinkies. Although two softtails went by me like I was standing still.

No, you should be able to go 95+. If your RPM's go up and you don't go any faster, then, yeah, your clutch is slipping. If your engine speed and vehicle speed just kinda top out and you can't go over 70, then you have something else wrong.

Sounds like possible clutch issues to me, or some sort of problem. As mentioned, you should be able to run 90-ish on that bike without issue.

When the top end needed to be done on my '90, the compression was low and it only had something like 42 horsepower. It felt good to me riding 2 up but obviously did not have a lot of power - but I don't remember how fast it would go. If the rings are bad, I think you can increase the compression for a short time by adding a ounce? of oil to the cylinder, it will smoke but you will feel the difference when riding - it is only good for a short period of time. Some where in the manual it talks about that. When they added oil to mine the horsepower went up to about 60.

I would def. pull and inspect the clutch, my RK will pull hard at 70. Ive never attempted a top speed run but 85 is no problem 2 up.

At the same time if you get on it hard from a dead start your clutch should slip as well though if its bad.

++1 on the if your rpms go up and speed doesn't, clearly clutch troubles, funny you don't have probs at start off when the power is the best?? Maybe the start of your ride vs. after you rode awhile? Is the clutch cable adjusted properly? Let us know what happens.

In my automotive experience, most of the time a slipping clutch will be noticed in the higher gears. Put it in 4th and nail it and the clutch will slip when the RPM's are up in the power band. Usually won't do that in 1st. The higher gears put more resistance against the clutch.

So, how's about some feedback, Bengo?

You are 110% correct, now I feel stupid, it's the ol power vs. weight formula. At higher speeds you have more resistance than power creating more drag, bingo!!, clutch slip. Sometimes i am too dumb for my own good. In lower gears there's not the resistance to movement as there is in the higher gears. I love this place!!!
