Default bike kicks/slips/surges every so often?

good afternoon all! i have a 99 softail with EVO motor. every so often when i take off from a stop, my bike seems to slip or surge kinda like the clutch slips a second or like it wasnt fully in gear. it doesnt happen every time. i have the bike in gear, let the clutch out and it moves forward just fine, but sometimes within the first few feet of rolling forward under acceleration, i feel a kick/slip/surge, like it wasnt fully in gear or something. the surge is quick and is fine afterwards........any ideas or experinces like this??

When the bike sits, do you have a small spot of oil under the rear of the primary?

What are you using as primary fluid? Almost anything works, but there are some types that definatley should NOT be in there. Make sure it is full....most use about one quart.

If the primary is not fully warmed up, while the fluid is still thick....can produce the symptoms you are describing.

If those are ok....then take a look at the clutch adjustment.

The primary drive sprocket can loosen up. First sign of this is a small drip of trans oil. The only thing that holds the sprocket to the trans output shaft is a big nut and lockplate with a couple machine screws. The MoCo 'upgraded' the lockplate design in 1994, but it's just a variation on the basic design. When the sprocket loosens to a certain point, it will move in/out on the shaft (it's all that holds the oil seal in-thus the drip) and may hit the inner primary.

It feels like the bike is 'missing', or 'slipping' when it makes contact with the inner. I know this because my 1993 FLHS had it happen half way between Gettysburg and Chambersburg, PA. Luckily the shop in Chambersburg was open (Saturday), and luckily they had a mechanic 'on duty'. It loosened up seven years later in Daytona, when I saw the oil spot I knew what it was. It's a simple fix, but not an 'easy' fix, as the entire left side of the bike needs to be taken down. Definitely not what you want to do on the side of the road.

I agree it sounds like a clutch problem. I would do as stated above is start by checking fluid level then clutch adjustment. As stated above it is not uncommon to get a little surging if the bike is not warm and you are riding in cold weather as the oil is to thick to let the clutch work properly.
