Default Looking for CV carb info

Hey All,

I have been searching on the forums for the past couple of days about info on doing an eventual carb swap. The bike is a '79 FLH Electra Glide with an 80 cube motor. I dont believe that there had been any serious engine modifications to the bike, as the PO wanted to keep it extremely driveable. Right now it has what I believe to be a Bendix/Zenith carb on it? (sorry not familiar with the different carbs) It runs, but the carb is in rough shape and I have been reading about the CV's reliability and maintenance free aspect. My questions are this....

What size carb should I be looking for on an 80 cube with no real engine mods? I have been hearing a few #'s from 38mm to 45mm and 42 seems to keep coming up.

I know there are Mikuni guys here and H/D CV guys, both seem like good carbs. Which one will be the easiest and least expensive to change over?

I'm also assuming that I will have to change out throttle cables and choke cable to accept the newer style carb.

Any and all comments are welcomed as I have a lot to learn on this bike. My advanced apologies if this is in the wrong forum area...Thanks for your time.

A 40 or 42 mm CV carb will work well on your 80 CI. I have a Mukuni which replaced my Keihn carb & there is a big difference! You dont have to do engine mods for this carb but you do need the manifold, the throttle cables & the air filter to go with your new carb.

We have a permanent adaptor that mounts on the carb and turns it into a bolt-on carb so that you do not have to change the manifold. It is really popular with the shovel head crowd!!

Shameless Bump back up top

BTW I have seen a lot of the CV and Mukuni carbs on ebay with the part #'s on them. Does the # distinguish what CC's the carb is and if so what would I look for to determine that?...Thanks again for all the help.

No. There are simply part numbers... avoid 88 Sportster CVs because they have no accelerator pump - you can tell by looking at a photo.

Good luck on your swap and do let us know how you like it when you're done
