Yes, stock, SE or some aftermarket setups have a timing sensor in the nose cone, module on the frame and coil (3 pieces) but not yours. The timing sensor and module are contained in the single nose cone unit.
sorry, i had read the thread and came back to it, your 100 percent right, mp, for what its worth, i had a crane hi4e, and it turned out to be problematic for me too, sorry for the confusion. chad.

Default Got'er going

Well people, I ordered my Dyna 2ki from Eastern Motorcycle Performance, when I received it I was very anxious to install it but had to wait until I had some free time.
What happened next REALLY! blew my mind, first, I disconnected the battery, unbolted the tank and moved it back, raised the front of it and slid a long screwdriver under the ears and sat it on top of the frame rail to get easy access to the coil mounting bolts to remove the coil. OK, coil removed, next I removed the cone cover, and chrome cone. I removed the timing bolts to get the HI-4 module out and when I turned it over I saw both magnetic pick-up sensors covered in metal fines( very fine hail like shavings). I knew that was not good, so I decided I would clean it up and put everything back together crossing my fingers it would start, and not have to replace the module. Well it did start right up, I let it warm up, turned it off and on 20 times or so to make sure it was good to go, and it was. I rode it for a week straight with no problems and then it was posessed again and would not start needless to say I was not happy. So I finally had time to go ahead & replace the module this past Sunday,(Super Bowl Sunday) but I could not locate the timing mark on the flywheel, and finally decide to just set the front cylinder to TDC & go for it. I replaced it, wired it, and shrink tubed all the connections, terminals, and set the module more or less in the same position the old one was in ( I made a mark on the cam gear cover cone about center with the HI-4 module B-4 removing it as a reference point) and hit the start button and it fired right up without a hick-up . So I waited for it to warm up and adjusted the timing by sound & RPM's since I didn't have someone to assist me in setting the timing with a timing light. I left it at about 900 - 1000 RPM's buttoned it up and went for a test ride, hell it felt great, problem now is this rainy weather . Next task is replacing the S&S oil pump.
I want to thank everyone that pitched in your suggestions, and tips, and special thanks to t150vej, the info you referred me to, was very helpful.

That's good to hear and you're quite welcome. Thanks for posting the outcome

I'm curious about the metal "fuzz" you found on the pickups and what could have been causing that if not the rotor cup hitting somewhere. And did you find any more when you removed the HI-4 to install the 2ki?

Near the bottom of page 5 of the installation papers tells how to time it correctly without a light and it's very accurate by that method... if you just "have to" play with it some more

I really have no idea where the fuzz came from, but did not find any on the pick ups when I took iy off to replace it with the 2Ki. I retarded the timing a to where it sounds and runs at about 1k rpms, took it for a ride and starts and runs great with exception of the top end noise.
