The OEM 1-piece rocker lowers are made the same as Cometic except OEM is 13.00 a pair and Cometics are 2.00 more - each. Metal Cometic base gaskets are 12.00 each while OEM mylar/print-o-seal are 3.00 each. And they do not leak. I've had my heads off 3 times without disturbing the jugs and after 6000 miles now, still dry as a bone. Try that with a James or Cometic. And other than reuse, I can make the same argument for OEM head gaskets.
No company on earth spends more time and money on R&D for Harley engines than who? That's right - HD!
If that were the case, they would have been right from the beginning, they never did get base gaskets corrected until the evo was nearly out of production, 14 years and they still leak, i question harleys r and d, and i wont even bring up the twin cam r and d

I keep getting this mental image of some cranky old dude, who probably went to grade school with William S Harley, hunched over a drawing board with a T-square, designing the next V-twin..
As erratic as this site has lately been: He probably has some relatives that work in IT.....
I have used James base gaskets on an 93 and 97 evo. and never had a problem,
as I still have the 97 RK. But I do realize that nothing stays the same. And I will
look closely at any NEW James that I need..My retired HD mech. told me when
he worked for the moco he had replaced 2 sets of base gaskets under warrenty
on the same bike. As the base gaskets were just GASKET PAPER....Tenn.Vol.
You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don't wanna know about it, believe me. Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o'clock this afternoon... with nail polish. These f#cking amateurs... Walter Sobchak

... can't believe Hackd had to go and rat me out ... at least somebody is thinking of me ...
I think some of this depends on where you live. In the midwest with quite drastic temp changes, you're gonna have leaks. When I lived in Dallas, all the guys I rode with never had probs. Talk with truckers, if you don't run in the cold, you don't encounter the oil leak problems. Like has been said, like an old chevy, change oil, why, just keep adding.
