well ive been meaning to replace my intake manifold seals for quite some time, do they leak, hell i dont know, but ive take the manifold off twice now and the last time it didnt look so good. any way i have the new seals, for a S&S shorty, and wondered if i should coat the seals with something. i have some oring lube, dow 101, or just install them and call it good.
ok i installed the new seals, applied some lube, question is how loose is the manifold suppose to be. i mean with it tighten down i can rotate it up and down. couldnt hardly do that with the old seals but then there were hard. i bought the rubber seals from jp cycles for a S&S manifold.
that was the problem, the S&S seals are a lot smaller. but with it tight i could lift the carb and intake up and it would fall on its own. anyway i called J&P and the guy, jake, checked the S&S against OEM and right away he saw the OEM were bigger so he sent me a OEM set, free of charge. nice to know they stand behind there product. i put the old one back on for now, gotta ride, and i really think there fine, just bored.
With "normal" (oem type) seals, they shouldn't rotate easily at all with the bolts tightened to snug. That's why it's a pain to get the air cleaner mounts, grommet seal and manifold all lined up with new ones. I generally mark the manifold before teardown to make that part of it all quicker.
I've sorta trashed James gaskets lately but try theirs for your manifold if the OEM types still lets the mainfold wiggle bad up and down. I don't have a photo, but unless they have changed lately, they have a groove that the manifold ends fit into that will take up a lot of extra clearance between the inlet and head. Like the regular tapered o-rings but come all the way around to the head surface with a flat. Almost like the grommet for the carb in a way...
